Popular Post GeorgeO
Exactly which industries are dominated by russian nationals? Sounds more like the press trying to whip up a storm of xenophobia and sensationalism. I would hazard a guess at prostitution and extortion for starters, and I would also suggest that the locals are up in arms essentially because the Russians are fully aware that the Thais hunt in packs, and they have the set up to be able to deal with that. "No Russian Mafia in Pattaya" is like saying there are no jet ski scams there either...!

All mafia are involve in prostitution, drugs etc ... Can be Russian, Italian, Chinese, Thai I dont think the Russian mafia is more active than another in Pattaya or Phuket. But I noticed many Thai visa guys dont like russian at all .... well I like Russian very much ....

"No Russian Mafia in Pattaya" is like saying there are no jet ski scams there either...! There was a Russin guy running a jet ski scam with a Thai lady across from Royal Garden. He was photographed on the beach, counting a big wad of cash (photo on the Mayors facebook page) and soon disappeared. This was about the same time the jet ski scammers began assaulting photographers too.

"No Russian Mafia in Pattaya" is like saying there are no jet ski scams there either...! But George, would you say that the Russians dominate prostitution and extortion (as per your examples), and in the overall 'industry'? What sort of a percentage of control would you think the Russians have? I would hazard a guess at about 1 - 3%, maybe. Whereas it is true that there are a lot of Russians in Pattaya, I would not, and never have understood the idea, that any foreign syndicate has any significant control of the overall picture relating to Pattaya. Control over their nationals, possibly, but not Thailand/Pattaya. IMHO I have always understood this as a media driven idea acted upon by peoples over-active imaginations. A couple of second class hits, failed robberies and a couple of people found dead, and Pattaya is now controlled by the Russian mafia? I don't think so............
Popular Post Tatsujin
Last time I was down in Pattaya, the place was inundated with Russians, and it seemed that a large proportion of the tour guides, agencies, go-go's, bars were all (ostensibly) not owned/run by Russians also. But perhaps I have my eyes open, rather than my head up my own ass, like most of the idiots quoted in the original post.

Jingthing
Russian is a difficult language. Very few Thais are ever going to master it. The sensible solution would be to legalize more Russian tourism workers and watch them like hawks. The current underground situation feeds mafia building. Popular Post Thaimung
What about the Russian money lending (laundering) gangs that was recently reported in the press??? Deny deny deny. "No prostitution in Pattaya!!!" Same BS they are coming out with. Heavily paid off without a doubt. Telling me that the Russian Go-Go bar in Walking Street with its Russian dancers and Russian promotors outside all have Work Permits??? What a load of B****cks.

Popular Post FireMedic
There is no Russian Mafia, Jet Ski mafia, taxi mafia, tuk tuk mafia, BIB mafia (for that matter), no monkeys on Bangla Rd, no underage prostitution, no drug problems,no violence problems, no unsafe roads, the transportation is totally safe(car, bus, boat), and there definitely nothing bad at all going on anywhere.... Seems like they have a pretty good theory: Stick to your guns and just keep repeating the same things over and over and maybe eventually people will believe them. The classic "head in the sand while keeping both hands open and a tip jar collecting money" technique. Keep people broke and uneducated and they will fall for anything. The repetition theory works! Everyday tell your Thai wife or girlfriend you are the most "handsome man #1" and I'm sure she will agree with you!!!

Popular Post technologybytes
Hold on a moment and listen to what he said. "There are no Russian Mafia in Pattaya". He did not suggest that there are no Russians, or even that there are no Russians involved in crime, or even organised crime.. he just said that there are no Russian Mafia in Pattaya. I'm sure the REAL Russian Mafia are NOT in Pattaya, unless you mean the odd connected guy taking his family on holiday there. It's kind of sad that a lot of people see the occasional Russian plastic gangster and confuse him with the real deal, believe me its not the same!

Sydebolle
The elder farts among us (me included) will remember the Minister of Tourism at the time (a lady) visited Pattaya and with go-go-bars signs as backdrop told the press accompanying her that there is no sign whatsoever of prostitution. Hence the hub of "no Russian mafia" can be added to the "no hookers" hub; well done
