He told The Phuket News today, “The argument started when he went to pick up the guest from the hotel. When a woman taxi driver went to ask him what he thought he was doing, he said he worked for a timeshare company.“The discussion ended when [Polting’s] customer arrived and they left for the new Tiger Kingdom.“The incident came to a head when he returned to the hotel later in the day. Once again he was confronted by the woman taxi driver but this time he waved a push dagger at her.”Mr Veera said when other drivers saw this they went over to stop him, but he went to his car and returned with a pistol, with which he threatened them. The taxi drivers told him they were calling the police, so he went away.“The police were able to arrest him nearby soon after that.”He was taken for questioning at the Police Station in Patong, where it was discovered that the pistol was a non-lethal BB gun, though Polting was also in possession of real bullets.It is by no means clear yet whether Polting was trying to start a taxi business. The Aussie guy wasn't thinking too clearly when he admits he was picking these people up working for a timeshare company. It'll work out though as the timeshare bosses will make things right with the bib once an envelope is presented. And clearly this sort of taxi service by a foreigner is strictly not allowed. He approached her wielding a bladed weapon. When he noticed that she was backed by other taxi drivers, he returned to his car and got the gun and rubber bullets. About 18 months ago my wife and I went to a hotel in Chiangmai to pick up 3 friends (Aussies) from outside a their hotel. My wife stopped outside and whilst they were getting in a taxi driver in front started ranting and raving at the wife. That is already a hot subject with the taxi drivers, but here we're talking taking a hotelguest to a major attraction. That means no connection to the timeshare at all, and missed taxi fare and more importantly missed commissions for the taxi drivers. I'm surprised the taxi drivers let him continue with his guests, I'm pretty sure that had he been Thai he would not have made it that far. Whether or not he gets a direct payment for the transfer services is immaterial, think e.g. also about the complimentary airport services offered, these are not allowed if not done by legal taxi (green plate) or tourist (yellow plate) transport.
