What is the odds this will be the most fixed World Cup so far?

If the final is with Brazil, probably somebody there will pay millions for Brazil be the champion in its own country. That's whas the "deal" in Argentina in 1978.....The goal keeper for Peru, "retired" after that qualifying match.

A Thai press survey shows that Thais will cheer for Brazil (27.7%), Spain (16.9%), and England (16.5%).

But they think that likely winners are Brazil (41.4%), Spain (18.9%) and Germany (16.3%).

Of course, what Thai viewers think is less likely to be accurate than the views of the vast array of barnyard animals and other creatures around the globe which are predicting matches - sheep, chickens, pandas, octopuses, Gary Lineker, elephants, lemurs and camels.

Apparently, in Japan, the sports TV channel has co-opted a macaque monkey which chooses between two potatoes, and whichever one it chooses releases a mechanism which rips the bikini off the appropriately team-clad female model. (This information has not been checked to be 100% accurate).

You gotta love the Japanese. Even if the report isn't completely accurate, you know its what they'd like to do.

According to one newspaper that I am not permitted to quote on Thai Visa, it is "possible" that the relevant court will rule on Tuesday or Wednesday whether or not RS must allow all World Cup matches to be shown free to air. It is "likely" that there will be a decision before the World Cup starts on Thursday. Presumably that means it is possible the court will not rule until after the Wold Cup starts (or ends?) TIT - sounds like a great Thai-style solution - don't rule until after the World Cup is overxtongue.png.pagespeed.ic.JwCxzAWj6x.png.

The newspaper article says also that:

- the 22 games (that are already agreed to be shown) are to be shown on channels 7 and 8

- True Visions has held talks with RS about sub-licensing rights. The article does not say with what result (!)

Amazing Thailand.

Yes, it was also being discussed by news anchor Sorayut on Ch3 news this morning.

There is one gotcha: it will probably only work if you receive free Thai TV through a standard TV aerial, rather than via a satellite dish and a set-top box.

I have a dish, and all free-to-air games previously have been blocked, while folks with standard aerials can watch.

RS reached an agreement with True. Apparently all the games will be shown on True.

According to RS's COO Pornpan Decharungchaigun, the way to watch is:

1. Be a TrueVision customer

2. Have a World Cup box (eh?)*

3. Have PSI HD box*

4. Add 299 baht to the Sunbox*

* in a shop today I saw a thing called a PSI Sunbox, so that may be what they mean in 2,3,4 above.

Some news outlets added that TrueVision Gold customers on up will be able to watch the games without paying any extra money.

Sorry if it's confusing, but that's what the Thai media (Khao Sot) is saying.

I wish we could see a list of countries and how the WC broadcast is being handled in all of them. TIT.facepalm.gif Last minute cretins.post-4641-1156693976.gif.pagespeed.ce.Jg

I recently stumbled upon exactly such a chart (for Asia at least) but can't find it now.

In some countries (Indonesia was certainly one) the whole thing is free, at the other end of the financial & organisational scale was Singapore, where a one-off payment of about $100 gets you full coverage on TV, tablet, smartphone, but nothing, typically, is free.

Aussies will know about SBS, the 'ethnic' channel, which is showing all the games free to a small, but growing audience (true Aussies prefer man's sports like rugby league and AFL)

But yes, the only country that (again) leaves important decisions until 72 hours before kickoff is Thailand.

Heaven help the country if it ever did qualify for the WC finals, they'd still be squabbling about which flight to take, what coloured shirts to wear, and who gets to play lead guitar on the team song.

Well I take the simple pragmatic approach.

You can only watch one game at a time. smile.png

Plenty of WC coverage on Thai TV. If you want replays, that will not be a problem either.

True, PSI, stream it on your PC or Mac.

Not a problem.

Unless you go to a well-appointed sports bar........ in a curfew-free zone, of course.

yeah. there's ways around the curfew of course. just be in the bar before midnight and drink your way through til 5am. then stagger out into the sunrise feeling bleeding awful.
