Cochlear Implant in Thailand

Soon i will move to Thailand.

Since short I have a Cochlear Implant, because my hearing has got worse in very short time and my hearing aids cannot help me good enough anymore.

I worry about possible problems with my Cochlear Implant and what I can do then.

Does anyone have experience in this and does anyone know hospitals or CI-teams in Thailand to where I can go if there would be problems with my CI ?

Thanks a lot for any information !

Henk

Need to consider not just care related to the implant but other medical needs and emergencies that may arise. If you can, get insurance that covers you abroad, even if it excludes hearing related problems, well worth having in vase of accident, heart attack, etc etc.

When i will move to Thailand, i will get myself an insurance with a good cover.

However, as far as i know, existing diseases are usually excluded. So i can (probably) not cover my hearing related problems in Thailand.

Thanks for your advice again

  • 6 years later...

I recently had a Cochlear Implant in Australia and am looking for an Audiologist who can adjust the settings if required (mapping). The implant is a Nucleas 7 and I plan to send my audio file from my current Audiologist in Australia. Obviously they need to be Cochlear accredited with the computer software needed. Long shot...old thread but hear...here....goes... ????

Wow 2 replies!!! Im returning Thailand in a few weeks after being locked out with the Covid stuff... I live in Burriram but not difficult to get to Bangkok.. Enjoy getting out of the Village every now and then.. I had a Cochlear implant inserted 3 months ago and the benefits are amazing.... The thing is you need to get the implant tweaked like a hearing aid so the nerves keep understanding the new signal and the ear keeps getting stronger... If you let it lapse then the ear gets lazy and the nerves stop re building.. Very important especially at  the start of the implant. The gear to monitor history and make adjustments is Cochlear specific. The computer that connects must have the latest software from Cochlear otherwise it would be of no benefit.

Audiologists in Thailand do nto have the same level of training as in the west (understatement..they are more like technicians) so you may have to see a physician who specializes in hearing and works in tandem with an audiologist

BNH hospoital has an excellent specialist, Assoc. Prof. Chanida Kanchanalarp, M.D. And an audiologist on staff.

I believe Prof. Chanida is also at Chulalongkhorn Hospital, (major govt teaching hospital) and there will definitely be audiologists there and likely a dedicated hearing clinic. Cheaper than private hospitals but long waits and no way to make appointment by phone or online, have to go in person
