Hi

If you live in Chiang Rai province you are just in the coverage of Agila satellite. It has all the best channels from UBC - including ESPN, Star movies, star world, discovery, history, geographic, hbo, AXN (new season of lost is playing), BBC, CNN etc etc

When you next go on your visa run to Tachilek, pop into a few of the electrical shops in Tachilek and pick up a GA Titanium satellite decoder, a dish and LNB all for about 3300 Baht.

When you get home grab your nearest satellite engineer and pay him about 500b to install the dish and point it to AGILA2KU satellite - its about 140 degrees east, - he will know (you should check that there arent any building in the way before you buy a set up)

You need to retune the decoder every 6 months when it is scrambled, your satelite engineer should be able to do this for you, if not take the decoder back to the shop in Tachilek and they will do this for you.

No Thai subtitles though, you do get 2 pornchannels too. The signal isnt great, it pixelates some times (for a few seconds every 10 mins or so).

Oh yeah, its free - no subscription

Panmarsat will work even in the heavest of rain. Also they can proved a second dish to downloadthe key codes. The latest option is E-box where you satellite decoder is connected permanentley to the internet for the downloads of the key codes. Let me know if you want more infomation. I have had my sytem installed now for a few months and it is certainly a better alternative to UBC. You will recoup you intial capital in 9 months

What's the chance of Agila, etc succesfullypreventing the use of their signal? I'd hate to buy the dish, only to find out that I then had to then pay a UBC-like monthly fee.............

Also, how long can the cable run be from the dish to the TV?

These services such as J-Sat are freely advertised in the Bangkok Post and in fact all around Chiang Mai. I don't see any prosecution of the suppliers. Where I live there are a large number of Farangs (and Thai) receiving the both Agila and Panmarsat! The information received on these satellite are not specificially UBC channels!

Hmm there is a UBC police? Sounds a bit harsh! Maybe I should have hidden my dish in a tree or something. Anyway luckily my house is in my wifes name Whats going on here I thought there were no copyright laws in Thailand.

I should have mentioned that Agila sat is very low down in the horison, so if there are any mountains or many building in the way you wont get a signal.

Also in a heavy storm it doesnt work.

I have seen this 15,000b + set ups, they are good but expensive for me. I am happy with my 3000b set up, a good option for those who need to save money. A lot cheaper that UBC.

It's not clear from your post, do you live in Chiang Rai ? If so I take it you had no problems getting your dish etc connected after buying in Chiang Mai?

Does anyone with Agila have problems at moment I've had no picture for a few days today came on for 2 hours then off again.

tayto: What a load of bull! The only way you can get in trouble in Thailand is by hacking UBC. I guess you just paid a lot of money for UBC and are upset of finding out you could get something better for free huh? Watching JSAT is not illegal. Pirating Dream TV (Agila2) is probably illegal in Phillipines but I fail to see what they can do you in Thailand.

Panmarsat - where's that pray tell? Lyngsat doesn't list it ...

Haven't got their number, but they are on the outer ring road directly north of the city.If you get on the ring road and pass mae Rim road on your left, they are about another 200 metres further down on the left.Can't miss them.

Word of warning, the signal is shit when it rains.Apart from that ok.Make sure you take a native Thai speaker with you, or they will try ripping you a new one.
