Changilainen Posted January 13, 2014 Share Posted January 13, 2014 I'm supposed to help organizing a fishing trip in Bangkok or somewhere nearby as a 50th year birthday present. Requirement for the trip is that it should be authentic and possibility to be on a boat. I googled and found some options but all of them seemed to be quite similar. From Bangkok you take minivan to a nearby lake/pond where you do the fishing. It didn't seem to be so authentic but I guess that's not the purpose of those kind of trips. Anyway, could someone recommend these kind of trips? Does someone have personal experience of some company which organizes these trips? The birthday hero and his family are staying at Ramada Plaza Bangkok Menam Riverside Hotel next to Chao Phraya. I couldn't find any fishing trips that would be organized at Chao Phraya. The purpose is not the get the next world record fish but to enjoy the day fishing with family. I could imagine that own long-tail boat from Bangkok to Ayutthaya and back along the Chao Phraya could be interesting trip. I know that there are cruises from Bangkok to Ayutthaya but never heard of fishing trips. Does anyone know are there such trips or could it be arranged? About 45 minutes from downtown. Been featured on countless Euro and US fishing shows. It's a world famous venue, and the bungalows make it perfect for a party. Search this fishing forum for tips and tricks- tons of threads on BSR. Being a thickly stocked fish pond, it's a guilty pleasure, but a pleasure nonetheless. Other threads in the fishing forum will show the dismal state of fishing in the wild in Thailand where there are no game laws and everything from minnows on up are eaten. Edit: At BSR, you pay by the rod, not by the head. You really don't want to fish more than 2 rods off a bungalow, 3 at the max, and that's really too many. You just take turns reeling them in. If anyone has a Thai drivers license or a work permit, let them pay at the front desk for the local discount, which is significant. They can provide everything you'll need, including guide, rods, bait, food, drinks, etc- all at pretty reasonable prices- most of them spelled out on their website. Their are boat rentals there at about 10k baht which includes the captain and one or 2 assistants. The boat max capacity is 15-persons but I think ideal should be around 4-6 persons to be comfortable. We left at 5:30pm and back the following day at 3:00pm. At night we got squids and at dawn we pretty caught fish (0.5-3.0kg) on the average at least 3 fish per person. If you're interested, I can look up my old emails and send you a link. And it's exactly why I don't fish the wilds of Thailand. Sadly, it's similar to the calculations I did from the newspaper fishing reports in So California when I lived there in the '90s. The reports looked impressive with a typical boat coming back from a trip with 150 bonita (small tuna). But then I'd divide that by the number of passengers (say 65), and the number of hours they spent (12 hours for a typical day trip), and factor in the cost of the trip (over $50 per head even in the '90s). And I stayed on the shore a lot, in spite of the fact I love fishing. The advantage in Thailand is the fishing parks that are available. A guilty pleasure, I admit. But still a fishing fix. I rarely go to BSR myself any more unless I have a visitor from out of town. Every fisherman who finds him/herself in BKK should try it at least once, though. It is a kick and pretty unique in the fishing world. Funny how I really enjoy being out on the water in a boat when I'm not fishing. But somehow it's not as enjoyable when I'm on the water fishing- and catching nothing. Probably says something about expectations. Or maybe the 100 passenger party boats in California weren't built for comfort... How are the amenities on the Pattaya sport fishing boats? Comfy seats for old farts with back pain? Decent places to nap? BTW, I've taken a real liking to Pilot 111. Fish aren't as big as BSR, but I can fly fish there, and lure fishing is a lot more active, which I like. jackinbkk Posted January 21, 2014 Share Posted January 21, 2014 I always enjoyed it (fishing parks) and the ease with which you can just show up with minimum tackle and hook big fish is great. They really fight hard. It's always exciting when you have the chance of hooking a 100kg fish. If I was doing it day in, day out I'm sure I'd get bored but for a holiday every 6 to 12 months I like it. It's certainly not real fishing. No water craft, no real bait selection, no finding the fish in a good location. There is something about not knowing what you'll catch. The reason I want to head to Florida around March time.
