BEVERLY HILLS, CALIFORNIA (BNO NEWS) -- Crime comedy 'American Hustle' and science-fiction film 'Gravity' have each scored 10 nominations for the 86th Academy Awards, better known as the Oscars. The historical drama film '12 Years a Slave' grabbed nine nominations.

The nominations were announced at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills, California, during a 5:38 a.m. local time news conference on Thursday. The announcement was made this year by Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences President Cheryl Boone Isaacs and "Thor" actor Chris Hemsworth.

Late last month, the Academy mailed ballots to its nearly 6,000 voting members who have since determined the Oscar nominations. Members had to return the ballots by 5 p.m. PST on January 8, after which they were tabulated and verified by accounting firm PricewaterhouseCoopers to ensure fairness and accuracy. Ballots received later than 5 p.m. PST on January 8 were not counted.

Official screenings of all motion pictures with one or more nominations will begin for members on January 25 at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater. Screenings will also be held at the Linwood Dunn Theater in Hollywood as well as in London, New York City, and the San Francisco Bay Area.

All active and life members of the Academy are eligible to select the winners in all categories, although in five of them - Animated Short Film, Live Action Short Film, Documentary Feature, Documentary Short Subject and Foreign Language Film - members can vote only if they have seen all of the nominated films in those categories.

The 86th Academy Awards, which are best known as The Oscars, are scheduled to be held on Sunday, March 2, at the Dolby Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center in Hollywood in Southern California. The Oscar presentation is televised live in more than 200 countries worldwide and will be hosted by comedian and television host Ellen DeGeneres.
