I have never heard of ''anyone'' paying a Thai blokes family sin sod dosh until now. Anyone heard of this practice ?.

I've heard of it. It's not exactly a tradition set in stone. Gay marriage is not legally recognized in Thailand so these are just ceremonies for show and sentiment.

So if this Thai guys partner was not German but another Thai guy, would sin sod be paid. OR, who would decide who pays who ?

Like I said, there are no set rules. Perhaps an older wealthy Thai would be similarly squeezed. Probably doubtful.

Many Thai gay men who are NOT sex workers are seeking relationships with foreigners.

I don't blame blame these Thai boys at all. 1 million baht is a good payout.

Snippets are fine but you really altered my meaning radically.

Why does any younger Thai gay or straight seek out an older foreigner for marriage?

Or younger ANY NATIONALITY -- much older ANY NATIONALITY?

Is economic aspiration for themselves and their families part of it or even a BIG part of it? Sure, usually, why not? This is not prostitution. Its marriage. Unless you're calling all marriage prostitution.

It's the way of the world, when people get together, each person brings something to the table.

If a hot young RICH thing married a destitute decrepit old wreck, people would call the young person INSANE and rightly so.

Love (as in the illusion of western romantic love) is not enough.

It's not as if all gay men would agree to paying ANYTHING to the Thai partner's family upon marriage. That's negotiable starting from baht ZERO. Do I think this German is a fool for paying so much based on a non-existent tradition? Yes I do pretty much but I hope he's a HAPPY fool.

It's this very negotiation as a means to an end which westerners generally find abhorrent. I think it's fair to say that most westerners view Sin-Sot or Dowry as a form of socialised prostitution.

Just because, in this case, the couple is gay; it would not change how many westerners view it (Sin-Sot or Dowry). Their homosexuality is a separate issue although it does add interest to the proceedings.

Whilst I don't know these people, or in particular the specifics of the Thai guy's placement within his family, one could speculate that any Dowry whatsoever the amount would be incalculable compared to the potential loss of the family's patriarchal blood-line.

Congratulations to the happy couple!

As far as the legalities of this, I think Coconuts has this a little wrong.

Germany does not have full marriage equality for same sex couples. They have something called "registered partnership" which carries many but not ALL of the same rights as opposite sex marriage. and of course a different name for it. Gay rights activists in Germany continue the political fight for FULL marriage equality for same sex couples.

The marriage PARTY in Thailand carries no LEGAL meaning in Thailand. As far as the Thai government is concerned, this couple is NOT married and the German legal relationship they have which has legal meaning there has NO legal meaning here.

As far as the age difference, 53 - 26 is hardly remarkable or unusual for European - Thai couples, gay or straight.

Coconut's assumption that the Thai MAN involved will be playing the role HOUSEWIFE is pretty obnoxious. He is a MAN. Gay couples joining together are TWO MEN. If gay people want to marry a WOMAN, they would do so, without any legal issues anywhere.

I am going to say that the Thai boy is the BTM is probably a pretty good guess.

I don't agree if you're focusing on position preferences. First of what do you mean THE bottom? Sounds like you assume gay people don't often SWITCH position roles. You really can't tell by age difference or superficial appearances. Also quite often those preferring the top position are surprising not at all butch. Also inappropriately hetero-normative to project a direct relationship between position preferences and submissive housekeeping roles. These stereotypes are more about sexist heterosexual models than the reality for GAY people. We aren't fake straights. Is that so hard to digest? OK, I'm assuming you're not gay based on your comment. Perhaps you are gay but that doesn't make the comment any less clueless.
