World Cup to boost bra sales

Another sort of cup will debut this week ahead of the beginning of the world’s biggest football tournament.

The Cup 2006, a field green-colored bra decorated with tiny footballs and the national flags of the 32 countries playing in the World Cup, is being released on Wednesday by the world’s largest maker of underwear, Triumph International.

Along with matching panties and a small football charm, the set was designed by the company as an “elegant solution to the conflict of interest” between male fans who will be primarily interested in watching the 64 games scheduled to begin on June 9 and their female counterparts who, according to Triumph, “believe that togetherness, love, intimacy and passion are some of life’s most precious things.”

“The Cup 2006 is an assurance that this special extra time will be exciting enough to challenge the action on the field,” the company said in a statement yesterday.

According to a survey of businesses conducted by the Thai Chamber of Commerce, World Cup-related spending will boost the country’s economic growth by about 0.07 percent with consumers in the Kingdom expected to spend around 15 billion baht on bras, beer and mobile phones.

Bars and pubs across the country are expecting record numbers of customers to watch the games and many have planned for the bigger crowds by extending opening times.

The survey also indicated that a significant increase is expected in the overall numbers of international and domestic phone calls and text messages.

Mobile operators said they are expecting a “surge” in traffic during the World Cup games, which will air in the Kingdom at 2am, 8pm, 9pm. and 11pm.
