Of course he knows the "dirty laundry" but prefers to side step it and bask in the glory of positive announcements and presenting trophies on the world stage,others are left to clean up the mess. Being on the FIFA committee is a ride on a never ending gravy train. Loads of free travel, great seats at stadiums ,staying in 5 star hotels who would want to get off ? I would suggest you google FIFA Commitee it makes interesting reading. We have as vice president Julio Grodona ,he's from Argentina and he is 82,been there forever and a day. Other VP'S include representatives from football power houses like Papua New Guinea and the Cayman Islands and people wonder how Blatter can have lasted so long there is your answer,simple vote buying arithmetic. It is a minor sport behind rugby league, rugby union, AFL, cricket, motor racing and things like horse racing ie Melbourne Cup. It is was down the list when it comes to sports in Australia. It will not provide a return for Australia and will be a huge loss to the taxpayer. soccer is a bigger sport in australia than it is or ever will be in qatar. has a lot of fans there and the league is gaining momentum all the time. but you're right about a world cup not providing a return. that's FIFA for you. Australia has more active participants in football of the soccer variety than League ,Union and AFL combined. Women's football is the fastest growing sport in the land.That does not always reflect in attendances but they drew over 90,000 people to Melbourne for a Liverpool friendly.Juventus will be going to the same venue shortly and it will be a sell out 90,000 +. Australia is a land of migrants be they Italian Greek,Dutch,Polish,British etc the game is in the genes. Attendances in League and union are in decline,Only 8,000 turned up for a Sydney RL game last weekend .The CEO of the Australia Soccer set up is David Gallop who use to be head honcho at Rugby League headquarters, he was sacked by RL headquarters and is now making his mark in our sport.Its not news but League Union and AFL are very concerned at the growth of our game which has very little media coverage due to the Murdoch media empire backing RL. We are currently the only growth sport in relation to crowd attendances As for the Melbourne Cup...excuse me......... its one day a year and a public holiday, the only country in the world that stops for a horse race.... is that relevant ? There is a slim chance that the WC, if it would be held in Australia, would make positive financial return as all the infrastructure is in place as it is a carry over from the Olympic Games,of course that would also depend on what slice FIFA took. As I understand it its only funding for the ABC and SBS that will be cut for Australian audiences,Both will continue on a reduced budget. The Australia ABC network, seen and loved through Asia, is due to be closed completely in September.Hugely dumb decision as the network is virtually a 24 hour a day ad for Australia and what is has to offer tourists and investment. Print media in Australia is dominated by the Murdoch Empire which controls nearly every major newspaper in the country. 4 pages of RL news and a by line for our football. That should make us all feel better. In time Blatter will be able to announce that after a full frank,thorough and exhaustive enquiry it has shown there was no corruption in the bid.
