Officials at the house with the rifle and other gear left behind by the encroachers.

PHUKET: -- Provincial police, including officers from Region 8 in Surat Thani, and forest rangers yesterday (July 17) raided a site in the hills above Kamala.

Acting on information from an informant, they found a wooden house surrounded by the stumps of trees.

The encroachers appeared to have left in a hurry; the officers were able to seize piles of timber, some sawn into planks, along with chain saws and hand saws, ropes and pulleys and tins of gasoline.

They also seized a small-calibre hunting rifle with with 15 bullets, registered to a Rungrote Kwanyuen. Officers will now locate him and bring him in for questioning.

It is not yet clear whether this was an illegal logging operation or whether the encroachers had been clearing the forest around the house to create a personal hilltop getaway for someone.

that house looks to have been there for 50 years judging by the mould on the boards and the faded colour, so calling them encroachers is a little inaccurate no?

That's not mould. They just started painting the place, getting it ready for a high end tourist, before they had to flee. biggrin.png

There are actually quite a number of shacks above 80 metres all over the island, most without electricity and probably farmers shacks. They do have some of the best views of all Phuket residents. These guys appear to be illegal loggers. I wonder if they had a permit for the chain saw?

No. Where there no such thing as encroachers years ago?
