When I was on Samui (2002 - 2005) before I moved to Phuket, this kind of thing never, ever happened. The "5 families" understood it was bad for tourism. If they get hold of the kids before the police the kids will be fish food. It was bad enough when the poor girl from Cambridge was murdered by the Burmese fishermen, this is unreal.. Such a normal thing around bar areas, walk up, smile, greet, and they naturally move to another bike. To be fair I was walking around for exercise at midnight one night a couple of months back, like is strikingly safe in most places in Asia, and had to walk through one of these parking lots outside a nightclub. A pack of teens was sitting outside on their bikes, and boy they gave me a look like a pack of ferocious dogs ready for attack, I got the message and have no doubt there was some anti-"white devil" sentiment as you claim, no clue why such aggressiveness exists, and I was just innocently walking by on my nightly exercise, fortunately there were some security guards nearby and I walked on unimpeded, but locked the door when I got home and vowed to watch out for such immature little punks, hell maybe they ended up wrecking the bike into a tree later that night, seems like it'd serve them right. What if the smile doesn't work? What's your next approach? The smile always works. But in the rare case it didn't, just give the regular friendly Thai greeting. I've owned big bikes for over 50 years in various countries (Western and Asian). Someone sitting on your bike can happen anywhere in the world. I saw it happen numerous times in Japan. Recently, in Chiang Mai, I came back to my new pickup truck in the hospital parking lot and was very surprised to see that some middle aged Thai guy had opened my tail gate and was using it as a writing desk. It was fairly obvious that he intended no harm to my vehicle. I opened my driver door and greeted him with a smile -- he promptly left. Certainly, I don't condone the killing, but common sense tells us a farang may get by with anger and a nasty mood in his own country, but it's definitely not a good idea in another country. 4 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Have a nice day a..hole. You need to fix that attitude, before it fixes you. Many times, in Thailand, I have sat on someone else's bike and they have sat on mine. If the owner comes along you give a nod and get up. Same with someone who sits on your bike. The key is always to avoid confrontation. Even if you are the hardest dude in town. You don't need to smile. You just need to let them know without aggression. Unless there is damage to your bike, there is no need to create drama. There are few places to sit and motorbikes are ubiquitous. No need to create bad feeling over something so small. If you approached me in such a manner, I would feel affronted and perhaps respond to you in an equally abrupt manner. Which might lead to an altercation. You might not emerge the winner. Would it have been worth it? You don't always have to smile. People can sense when you don't have a good mood, but you don't need to be aggressive or belittle. Don't make enemies. I'm certainly not commenting on what happened to the person mentioned in the original story. I was not there, so have no right to pass judgment. The best you can do in this world is to avoid confrontation. Most of the moronic aggressors will eventually get bored when nobody retaliates. Getting angry in Thailand is never the right approach though. It should never have happened. RIP He could have backed-off and had his GF or a member of the nightclub staff procure the bike. One has to ask the question of what was the Blood-Alcohol level of the victim? Anyway, R.I.P. to the victim of this senseless murder. Yes it's not worth it but the biggest loss is the Germans life and probably due to testoterone. Not that I am blaming him for being killed, it certainly was not his fault but if he has lived here long enough he knows the way to to deal with these animals and he made a wrong choice.
