Koh Tao murder probe 85% complete: Panya
The Nation

KOH TAO: -- The police investigation into the murder of two British backpackers on Koh Tao, off the coast of Surat Thani, is 85 per cent complete, a police commander said yesterday.

Everybody who was in a 600-metre radius of the murder scene between 2am and 4am on September 15 is a suspect, said Pol Lt-General Panya Mamen, chief of the Police Region 8 command. The resort island comes under his jurisdiction.

He said the remaining 15 per cent of the case was classified, and "when overall progress can be revealed, arrests can be made".

Panya said the police probe was not complicated, adding that luck was on their side as leads and tip-offs about the killers were coming in continuously.

"This helps police to do their work more efficiently," he said.

The officer spoke to reporters after landing on the island in a helicopter. A police command post has been set up there, where investigators provide a daily briefing and updates on the case at the orders of deputy national police chief Pol General Somyot Poompanmoung.

A police source said another witness was being interviewed, and that police were conducting a parallel probe to double-check on this person's accounts.

Meanwhile, Tourism and Sports Minister Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul is to visit Koh Tao today to oversee the boosting of safety measures.

Separately, Koh Pha-ngan district chief Thaweesak Inphrome said he would work on suppressing vice in the area as ordered by Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha. Thaweesak's governing authority covers Koh Tao.

The district chief also vowed that no murders would take place during high season in December, when visitors flock to Koh Tao, Koh Samui and Koh Pha-ngan for Full Moon Parties and the New Year countdown, thanks to heightened security and the suppression of vice.

This article is pathetic. Yesterday the police claim its media tips and social networking that is hindering their investigation. Now they say its helped them.

They claim to be looking for people during 2-4am yet the coroner said no time of death could be made since they froze the bodies prior to the autopsy.

And how in the heck can someone make a vow that no one would be killed? Especially since the killer/s are still roaming free?

Sent from my GT-S5310 using Thaivisa Connect Thailand mobile app

Where does it state that the lucky/helping lead and tips came from media?

Reason why they might be looking at that time, is because their tip are telling them something about the killers relation to something (could as an example be regular customers on AC Bar).

"Everyone within in a 600 meter radius between 2-4 AM is a suspect, and it is 85% complete" says Panya. After all this time, it appears that this started out as a coverup and now it is a coverup of a coverup.

I am afraid so too, but i hope that it could be PM overlooking the case, so they are circling back to what could actually be the truth. I mean that it's a coverup of a coverup by actually going for the real killers because there is no other choice now, because their a** is on the line too.

I know many probably wont find that likely, but i honestly do hope so.

85% complete which is 'unclassified' and 15% that is 'classified'.

So that means the investigation is now 100% complete at the above ratio.

So who was it?.... The Chuckle Brothers?????

Yes, it does sound like it and that "when overall progress can be revealed, arrests can be made".

However, "Everybody who was in a 600-metre radius of the murder scene between 2am and 4am on September 15 is a suspect" that statement just makes it confusing then, unless everyone 600 meters from the murder has somewhat been involved, not saying they have been a part of the actual killing, but at least as witness to something related.

KOH TAO: -- The police general leading the investigation into the murders of two British tourists on Koh Tao explained yesterday (September 25) that they are about 80 per cent through the evidence collected.

Pol Lt Gen Panya Mamen, Commissioner of Provincial Police Region 8, told reporters, “From the evidence we have, we believe that the suspects work or live close to where the murder took place. We do not have a warrant to arrest anyone yet, but the evidence we have points to someone who was in the area between 2am and 5am that morning."

Gen Panya echoed comments made by Deputy national police chief Somyot Pumpunmuang, slamming social media for spreading false rumours.

He explained that he wanted to update reporters on the situation and set things straight, since there have been various stories published online, confusing people. “From now on, I will be the only person giving out information on the case.

“There are many theories circulating in social media. We cannot stop this from happening, but if all this chatter affects the families, then the people posting on social media could be sued by the families of the victims.”

If no warrant, maybe better to keep such things from being said, because there is no need to let the killers know that you're closing in on em.

" ... the evidence we have points to someone who was in the area between 2am and 5am that morning."

That would make sense considering that's probably when the murder occured.

I think by that statement they mean that the current suspect is in fact someone who is known to be in the area at that time.

" When overall progress can be revealed arrests can be made. "

Why not arrests first then explain providing the boasting and back slapping doesn't jeopardise a prosecution ?

However the BIB, DSI etc feel obliged to tell everyone in advance what they are going to do next so suspects / arrest targets have time to set up a defence, destroy or arrange evidence and of course leg it if they can.

Softly Softly Catchee Monkey probably doesn't translate into Thai but isn't suitable anyway as getting a headline to show importance is a priority.

The public might not understand how good you are unless you tell them at the earliest possible opportunity.

Delete softly softly , insert, like a bull in a China shop.
