catweazle
Aaaaand the "Koh Tao Handbook of how to not get raped and your face bashed in with a garden hoe" reads:Rule 1) stay in the party zones only, you enter killzones (rest of Koh Tao) on your own risk. Rule 2) get into an argument with a family member of the local mafia, call home and say goodbye since basically you are done.Rule 3) never, ever attempt to disturb a local police officer when in need for help, because they are employees of the people who will kill you anyway.Rule 4) drop all your valuables in the designated container in your room for easier confiscation by hotel personell after you have been killed.Rule 5) wear the ugliest and most unsexy dresses you can find, and DON'T even dare to wear makeup to avoid arousing potential killers.Rule 6) pretend that your marriage, engagement, etc. is an unhappy one to avoid potential killers' jealousy that could lead to your death.Rule 7) don't wear weapons - makes the killing easier and more fun for your killer.Rule 8) please be warned that you will be charged with murder if you kill an assailant in self defense. Learn to let go! Rule 9) please be aware of the fact that the tourist curfew starts at 08:00 p.m. and ends at 07:00 a.m. Rule 10) give money you would have spent partying during curfew time to the local disco or bar mafiosi in an envelope during day time to keep the Koh Tao economic system in balance. Many thanks for your support and have a nice holiday!
csroland
Now the only delay with the implementing is that settling on the wristband's colour...red, yellow, or whatever the current flavor is... Red and yellow? Should tourist also show where they politically belong to?

Number 3
<script type='text/javascript'>window.mod_pagespeed_start = Number(new Date());</script> Now that several posters have seen fit to make comparison to the Nuremburg laws, might it be time to look at this a little more calmly. Is a tourist ID band at a resort/hotel such a bad idea? I read on TV several times per year the stories of entire Euro-families getting themselves lost in the jungle, when they wander off the beaten path. What is wrong with an ID band that helps those Euros who don't have enough sense to realize the hazards of getting lost in the jungle? Some Thai finds them and can read where they are staying and get them back. If somebody wants to inflict harm, wristband or no will not make a difference. This isn't entirely the goofy idea it's being made out to be. Nature is pretty tame in Europe and a lot of people have no idea what they are wandering into. What is wrong whit carrying a business card of your hotel? Longtom this would have to be the most absurd post I have ever ever had the pleasure to read on tv. Lost in the jungle ? Nature is tame in Europe ? And burkas serve to protect women and allow them freedoms as well. Hand out burkas to cover those bikinis too. You just cannot be serious with this post can you ? Just speechless....

Chicog
Whether a good idea or not, the couple HAVE been identified, but i do except that identification of someone lost/drunk could be useful. In the rest of the world they are shoved in a cell for the night to sleep it off. And who needs a wrist band to tell them what hotel they are staying at F F S?

nigelnigel
How about enforcing the laws that are already there and teach everyone to respect the rule of law. This should include those who are expected to enforce same said laws. Rule of Law? In Thailand? haha....you sir are funny But as soon as I read this I was thinking the same thing. It would be so easy right ? Teach the citizenry what laws are, that they should abide by them and this #1 fact: There is a consequence for your actions! No one cares ! Popular Post Seekingasylum
These coloured tags could be quite useful actually but of course would only work if one was not colour blind. Red - Farang resident = No, I don't want a girl, boy, timeshare resort bed, taxi, tuk-tuk or anything else for that matter and I know the bleeding Royal Palace ain't closed. Yellow - Farang resident but needs financial assistance and will consider employment as an insurance provider, boiler room operative or teaching English or, in fact, anything so I don't have to return home. Green - Tourist and fair game for any scam going. Black/White - Criminal refugee with warrants outstanding now operating property development, time shares and estate agencies ( may be combined with yellow bands ). Polka Dots - Frazzled Farang, away with the pixies, violent after 3 Chang and given to speaking incomprehensible gibberish in any Farang bar, particularly during happy hour.

indyuk
I think that we are missing the point. Which is that in order to make foreigners safe the Thai Establishment want to know more about we foreigners than they do already. Given that the Immigration Police already extract more data from us than the hold for most Thai citizens, it sometime it seems that Thai police favour foreigner cash fraudulently flowing to the Thai (including themselves) via a criminal although they swear that they stopped collecting tea money a long time ago. alanferdi
"Tourism and Sports Minister Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul said she had approached hotels over the idea of handing out wristbands to help identify tourists that get lost or into trouble." Or make them stand out even more as a target as well as letting assailants know where they are staying and their passport details. Absolute genius. What next.... safety nets around condominims with floors higer than 3 storeys! or regulated tourist sites and hotels for tourists? Safety is not putting people on a grid. Its making the existing system work - like the police force, security and keep a good tab and tag on thugs in the area. Funny that with the deaths, the police immediately.. took DNA of a work camp close by...while other suspects were left to leave the area - Tourist, local top dogs and the rest. Work proceedures and promote honesty. If Dog tagging, which is used in Europe only for prisoners are going to be issued in Thailand.... THEN I AM OUT OF here.... BIG BROTHER... Shame they could not get the top guys like Mr T on this programme... still on the run in Cambodia and the neighboring countries! Tourist come to a country to enjoy it beauty and simplicity. Mrs Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul should consider taking action with the local police. - Hire a policeman or police maid to escort tourist! just a thought might save money on the electronic gadgets and humiliation and increase income in the region.
