British Resident suffers broken arm over 40 baht parking fee in Central Pattaya



PATTAYA: -- In the early hours of Sunday, a 70 year old British resident of Pattaya suffered a suspected broken arm following an altercation with a car park attendant who was unable to collect a 40 Baht parking fee from him.

The incident occurred at a car park opposite the Diana Dragon Apartments in Soi Buakhao just before 2.30am, which was under the control of Khun Tosapon aged 19.

Mr. John Hayward reportedly parked his Bronze Chevrolet car in the car park and left for a short moment to purchase something and then returned to his car. Khun Tosapon claims he approached Mr. Hayward and requested the 40 Baht which was not forthcoming. He further explained that Mr. Hayward attempted to drive away which enraged the parking attendant who picked up a piece of wood and struck Mr. Hayward’s car. Mr. Hayward stopped his vehicle and confronted the attendant who then struck the elderly man across his arm.

Another Thai newspaper states that local witnesses apprehended the parking attendent from running away and the Brit had parked outside a convenient store and not in the parking lot.

Same thing happened to me on Samui last week ,parked up for 10 minutes came back Thai approached me and demanded 20 baht for parking ,there were no signs or anything displayed I swallowed my pride and paid up so I can live to tell the story because I know what would happen if I refused , here on Samui it seems to be a popular hobby it is called " scamming farangs " !

Agree, as far as I know this is a 24 hre. car park, and 40 Baht is very reasonable. Try telling a clamper or traffic warden back home that "I only nipped in for the newspaper". I suspect (but obviously do not know)that the attendant felt belittled by the driver's attitude and arrogant behaviour by trying to just dismiss him and drive away.

The attendant should have clarified the fee before he parked so he had the option of paying or parking else where, plus who pays for parking at 2.30 am when dashing into shop for 6 pack and condoms.

Perhaps he should have. Saying that I was dropping off someone at the bus station in Ekkamai bangkok, I was asked to move to another place, I did and then they asked me for a parking fee. I dropped my passenger off and left,,,

However, even if it was legitimate hitting his car and then breaking his arm is hardly just.

Yet another example of the contempt Thai people feel towards foreigners.

Land of smiles? Don't think so,,
