Popular Post craigt3365
The parking in that area is very difficult. But at 2:30am, and now during low season, it's not too bad. From the pics, it seems the car park is well signed. You park there you should know you'll have to pay. But hitting him with a piece of wood is out of line. The parking attendant should face charges for this.
Popular Post bendywire
Some of the comments on here are unbelievable. There is no justified reason why this yob used violence to get his money. Regardless whether it was a justified charge for parking or not. Saying he would have had to pay 3000 baht fine in another country is purile and only serves to justify violence. Thailand right now is in a very bad place if people have to resort to violence of this kind. If we are using another country as examples of law then the yob in question would be charged with ABH and criminal damage. Wrong is wrong regardless of where you're from.
WitawatWatawit
The other paper's version would have to be more credible if you stop to think about it. Regardless of the time of day, would anyone really take a guy dressed like Tossapon seriously? Not a chance he is anything other than a little weasel opportunist. But the Brit, who probably thought so too, should have just kept his window up and gunned his engine. Anyway, kudos to the bystanders who caught the little scumbag. I'm sure if any of them thought he was anything other than a weasel pest, they would not have done so. (I'm assuming here that the bystanders are locals - foreign boozers at that time of day would not interfere - and know what's going on.)
Popular Post Confuscious
Welcome to thai prison Mr parking attendant .... Hardly .... The boy is 19 years old. No prison for him. I guess he will have to pay the mandatory 100 baht fine and slap on the wrist.
pizzachang
Now you know the reason people just park on the road and don't worry about parking lots, if all you're doing is dashing into a shop. The odds that a policeman will ticket you are slim to none. Bangkok has actually implemented enforcement of no "road parking" but most of Thailand ignores this law.

Popular Post bendywire
Someone 70 years old should know better than to confront a teen. The outcome was never going to be favorable. Agreed. Unfortunately most 70 year olds have a chip on their shoulders towards teenagers. So its ok then for a teen to hit his car? Would you also like back up with some facts regarding 70 year old having a chip on their shoulder regarding teenagers. Maybe you have the said chip on your shoulders about old people.

Popular Post MaxYakov
Yet another example of why I will never own or operate a motor vehicle in Thailand. Although I have to say rank stupidity of both of these individuals seemed to have prevailed. Where I come from parking rates are known and accepted upon arrival, not departure. Anything else is inviting a scam. In any event, the Brit violated one of my cardinal rules: AVOID CONFRONTATIONS (and attempting to drive away is not necessarily the best way to do so). I see arrogant Westerners transplanting their car and biker culture to Thailand where wealth-envy derangement syndrome is rampant and the infrastructure cannot support the number of vehicles owned just by Thais and wonder at the stupidity. As to the totally out-of-control motorbike situation in Thailand, the Japanese motorbike manufacturers must really love the Thai people for their obsession with those dangerous, polluting machines. Jip99
Nice of the man in uniform to squeeze his arm to see if he was telling the truth. Should have paid his parking fee. If you live and drive in Thailand you should know the procedure. If he was back at home he would be looking at a 3000 baht fine. No he would not. He had not committed any offense.

You seem to have missed the expression on the Brit's face. Obviously playing it for all it's worth. And undoubtedly he played arrogant Khun Farang when approached by the attendant. He certainly is to be congratulated on saving the Baht 40. You have jumped to every conclusion going without knowing the facts of the case. Lets hope that the 19 year old has to face assault charges in court then all the facts will emerge.
Popular Post Equalizer
Listen, bottom line is these little tossers would not hit a 70 year old Thai man with a big stick ''FACT''. hawker9000
If we eliminated all the shit that happened after midnight the pile would be reduced substantially. Stay home after midnight and enjoy life. Absolutely! And while we're at it, let's just require everyone to have a police clearance to leave their home at any time, day or night! You know. Sort of like that "hall pass" thing to go the restroom back in grade school. That pesky "choice" thing just gets people in trouble. Personal liberty is way overrated... . . . Some guy realizes he's being scammed, refuses to go along or be intimidated, and is attacked with a weapon. No wonder thai teens see farangs as easy meat. Some of you are gonna' just LOVE those bracelets they're thinking about making tourists wear... The perfect fashion accessory for the easily intimidated. Better learn to keep some "ready cash" in your pocket at all times. Edited October 6, 2014 by hawker9000
Popular Post bendywire
Serves him right. He parked, he pays, end of story. You sir are a muppet. When you're this guys age and someone spanks you with a weapon then maybe you will think differently. There is and never will be justification for violence and especially no for a stupidly small amount.

bino
Wonder if said car park attendant was on the payroll of the car park owner. Or at 2:30am just an opportunist who saw cars parking on an unattended car park and thought he could make some easy money. If he was on payroll, he probably won't be any more. Any record will be destroyed and said car park owner will deny ever knowing said car park attendant.
Popular Post hobobo
I think there must have been a mistake in reporting - shouldn't the police check first whether the parking attendant was a migrant worker? Surely a Thai man wouldn't harm a defenseless old chap....

orientalsf
I believe the old fart should have just paid the 40 baht. Talk about cheap Charlie. Popular Post IAMSOBAD
I hope the British press does a story about violence in Thailand and tourists cancel their trips here. Wake up Thailand and put your scum in jail. Farang MUST report every 90 says while your criminals are free on the streets. I hope this story goes viral.

Agree, as far as I know this is a 24 hre. car park, and 40 Baht is very reasonable. Try telling a clamper or traffic warden back home that "I only nipped in for the newspaper". I suspect (but obviously do not know)that the attendant felt belittled by the driver's attitude and arrogant behaviour by trying to just dismiss him and drive away. Ain't it a Shame You can't READ. Already been Explained previously was outside a convenience store yet you in your great wisdom prefer to denounce the poor 70 yrs of age Bloke. That would be Rescue personnel, if you can read English and read the red Rescue lettering. I park at the lot he is all the time, they have a little bamboo hut there to relax in, and I see 2x4's sitting there allot, he probably mouthed off and probably deserved it. I am not new to Thailand, I have been here 14 years and pissing of a Thai is not to wise, just pay the $1.50 and go home, 40 baht is not worth a fight. Thailand is like Mexico, mess with the bean you get the while burrito, mess with rice, you get the whole rice bowl. Peace. W.B.
