PHUKET: -- Some residents Phuket received a shaking this morning as shock waves from an earthquake to the north of Aceh Province in Indonesia arrived.

The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) in Phuket said that there was no likelihood of a tsunami from the 5.3-Richter temblor at 7am.

A DDPM officer told The Phuket News that the quake, centred about 260 kilometers south of Phuket, could be felt on the island.

“People in Phuket could feel it this morning but there is no need for concern as a tsunami is generated by an earthquake of at least 7 on the Richter scale and with a centre no more than 10 kilometers below the earth’s surface. This one was 24 kilometres deep.”

Tourists in Phuket undaunted by the Sumatran earthquake

PHUKET, 27 October 2014 (NNT) – Tourism in Phuket has not been affected by the 5.3 magnitude earthquake originating from the north of Sumatra Island earlier this morning.

The quake’s epicenter was 24 kilometers deep under the sea and 256 kilometers away from the tourist province of Phuket. People in the area have reportedly felt the tremor but they have continued their daily life as normal.

Residents living in Thalang and Ratsada districts and especially those who were close to the beach have experienced the aftershocks. However, they did not panic as there were no warnings of an impending tsunami.

Fishermen have been out and about and no damages have been reported. Tourists in Patong continue to take their time and were unafraid of the disaster. Nonetheless, they have been told to listen to updates, as there could be aftershocks.

There was no unusual seismic activity prior to the 2004 Boxing Day earthquake. Whilst volcanism is often presaged by seismic activity tectonism is normally sudden and without warning.

It was a chain reaction - a big quake off Stuart Island in New Zealand a day or so before destab alised the whole area. I remember the quake being reported on Australian TV, so it must have been a really big one as NZ has quakes pretty much every day. At the time that was what was blamed as being a precurser.

Well that takes care of the Xmas season.

Yea, funny how short peoples memories are of Christmas past, I hope they are good swimmers. It seems some people don't put the ring of fire together!

Keep your motorbike near by and be able to head up the hill.

That's 9,000km away and on a completely different plate boundary, if that's the case the little bump yesterday could presage a quake in Athens!!

I remember thinking that at the time, but that's how it was being reported on Australian TV before anyone knew just how bad it was. After the first hour or so, when the reports started coming in they didn't mention it again, much more important things to report. It just stuck in my mind and I didn't question it afterwards.

My bad, of course it can't happen.
