And they're off...

PHUKET: -- More than 1,000 people joined Phuket’s first International Night Run on Saturday (November 1).

The number was well over the 700 expected by the organisers, Saphan Hin magazine.

After the usual speeches, the fun run kicked off at 10:30pm, followed by the more serious 11.2-km mini-marathon 10 minutes later, following a route from Saphan Hin Stadium through the old toen and back again.

The route took runners along Thalang Road, with its colourful lighting, and also featured five photo stations where runners could take selfies.

The top 350 runners each received awards, as did the winner of a fancy dress competition. Runners who wanted to choose their bib numbers could do so for a small fee, with money raised going to charities that support education.

I live on Phuket and run regularly but I missed this event completely.

Guess they mostly aimed it at Thais and not foreigners.

At least it sounds like a big success: more participants than expected, raising money for charity, and some silly stuff like a fancy dress award for laughs.

Hope more events like this will follow in the future!
