Guns, drugs, a high-speed chase: Phuket police win

PHUKET: In a high-speed chase reminiscent of the scene in The Bourne Identity, four armed members of a drug gang were arrested on Wednesday (November 5) after they crashed in Thalang while being pursued by police.

At 9:45am, as part of the crime and drug suppression campaign leading up to yesterday’s Loy Kratong Festival, Thalang police set up a security checkpoint on the Old Airport Rd in Thepkrassatri, stopping vehicles to check for illegal items.

A blue Isuzu truck registered in Trang was signaled to stop but instead the driver accelerated and blasted through the check point at high speed.

Lt Suchart Leicha, accompanied by a subordinate, gave chase in a police pick-up.

Lt Suchart ordered his man to shoot out the tyres on the truck ahead but the shots missed, hitting the back of the truck.

So Lt Suchart sped up and slammed into the fleeing truck, ramming it off the road in front of Baan Phru Samphan Mosque. The blue truck took out two motorcycles but luckily only one of the riders was injured, and that lightly.

Lt Suchart was slightly injured as his truck, too, went off the road.

The suspects, trying to collect their wits after the crash, found themselves surrounded by an angry mob of locals who gave one of them a good whack on the head.

More police arrived at the scene and arrested the four occupants of the truck who gave up without a fight – which was just as well since a search of the vehicle uncovered a home-made pistol and a pump-action shotgun with five shells.

The search also turned up three bags of crystal methamphetamine (ya ice) together weighing 60 grams, and a set of scales.

The four men were identified as Chinnawat Prampri, 24 (the driver), Pornchai Shaitung, 32 (who took the whack over the head from the mob), Detnarong Sangjan, 29, and “Toon”, 25.

They were taken to Thalang Police Station for interrogation by the Phuket anti-narcotics squad headed by Col Arayapan Pukbaokhaw.

Col Arayapan said afterwards that Pornchai had admitted that the two guns and the ya ice belonged to him.

“I bought the drugs for B20,000 in Thalang for me and my friends to use,” he said. “The guns were for my protection.

“We were driving around looking for my girlfriend, who is upset with me, and we drove through the roadblock to avoid being searched,” Pornchai said.

Police were not entirely convinced; they believe the four suspects were “up to no good” and probably “had big plans” that were thwarted by the chase, crash and arrests.

Police learned that Pornchai was only recently released from Phuket Prison where he was serving time for robbery, and the other three all had arrest records for drug possession.

Good grief. That's 12 gauge pump shotgun that's had the buttstock cut off to more of a pistol grip and the barrel sawed off to make the whole thing more concealable and maneuverable. Four of the shells on the table are 3", one is 2 3/4" and altogether that's a nasty package.

I can't tell the make of the shotgun and I think it's quite old.

I am making an educated guess that its an old Ithaca Model 37. These were a common police issued riot gun and often came with the extended magazine tube and rifle sites.

You must be a bit younger than me as this was a very popular shotgun in the day and unique in that it had a bottom ejection.

Even after looking up the definition of "bog standard" (thanks for teaching me a new word), I still don't know what this means?

Wow comparing the chase to the Bourne Identity? Come on!! Give me a break!! Are the police writing this crap themselves? And the Police win???

I remember they won about 3000 times during the Taksin war on drugs.

Ah...you witnessed the chase then and can comment.

That great.

Oh wait...you didn't witness the chase?

Then how can you compare what is true and not true about the statement?

How can the slap stick police, riding their scooters be compared to the Bourne Identity?

Wasnt that long ago, a police chase had one cop try and shoot the tires out and instead hit another cop from the ricochet....

Its at the point that I just dont believe much that is being reported or said by the police.... However the news is becoming a comedic show that is exposing Thais as being in a deep hole of incompetence and any sense of morality or logic.... and that is MHO....

I do really miss proper news without the need to clean out too much of the crap... it gets tiresome

Did you miss the part where it said the police were pursuing in a truck, which was even pictured?

Much better to make up your own narrative to support your bias since the actual reported events don't support the validity of your point.

Dear police, there is a way to send a bad guy car into a spin while keeping control of your own police car.

It is called pitting, as in "send to the pits" and comes from the nice polite NASCAR race drivers who use the technique to bump a rival drivers car into pit row for repairs.bah.gif

It involves getting your front fender lined up with his rear fender, side by side fenders, and then driving sharply into his fender and then pulling back into control. That impact will usually send bad guy car into a spin; it is a rare driver who can recover safely from the maneuver and keep on going straight. Police, save yourself and pit at will.w00t.gif

Looks like the cop in orange has just given the guy in front of him a well deserved slap.

It doesn't look like that at all, someone should give you a well-deserved slap for suggesting it.

Deserved or not, it does comically look like one of the perps got tapped on the back of the head by the cop holding the gun... rolleyes.gif

Since when does 'actual reported events' equate to truth?

Oh no. Not me.

I would never be so foolish as to suggest anything is the "truth" unless I saw it with my own eyes.

Oh!! So you are saying the journalist that wrote this article also witnessed the chase and therefore can compare it to the Bourne Identity? Unless the car chase was going around in a circle then it probably continued for several miles or more so unless the journalist was sitting in the cop car that was chasing these guys I doubt he saw any of it either. Get a grip grumpy man!!!

The journalist had the benefit of talking to witnesses and seeing the actual accident site.

I only hoped you might have had the same benefit since you speak with such authority.

Signed,
