Lots of bleeding policemen and smashed vehicles on the screen. The explosions happened nearly at the same time at about 11:30 am, police said. Six attacks were made in Yala's Muang district and two other attacks in Yaha district. An unknown number of injured people have been rushed to the Yala Provincial Hospital. Police sources said many could be killed and injured but an exact number was still not known. The banks, which were attacks included Bank of Ayutthaya, Siam Commercial Bank, Siam City Bank and Islamic Bank, located in Yala downtown. A source from the Siam City Bank in Yala downtown said an official received a phone call, saying a bomb had been planted near the manager's room. The caller told the bank to evacuate its employees immediately but the bomb exploded shortly after the phone was hung up. A bank official was injured on his arm and bank customers ran for their life after the explosion, the source said. Sources from security agencies said they have received a tip-off that the militants would launch coordinated attacks in a few days but they expected the attacks would be carried out on Friday. An anonymous caller warned one bank it had been targeted, prompting a panic flight, minutes before an explosion, police said. At least 15 banks were attacked in quick succession on Thursday morning, many of which were in Yala province. So far one death has been reported, and police say many other people have been injured in the blasts. The attack is the latest in a string of violent incidents in the Thai south, where more than 1,500 people have been killed since January 2004. A former soldier was killed while at least 40 people were hurt when the bombs exploded inside the banks, police said. The military immediately ordered all banks in the province to close, said Major General Somkuan Saengpattaranetr, spokesman for the southern army regional command. No big operations (a part the assault of the mosquee and the massacre on trucks). Every day : shootings. Every week : bombings. And since a few months, coordinated bomb attacks. We all know that thai police loves to show on TV its actions. So why, this silence... ? 2 solutions : -security forces are completly powerless. They achieve nothing. -it's part of a plan to reinforce the "need" of Mister Thaksin (by keeping among the public a sense of emergency and fear), it means that they don't really try to stop the insurgency. sriracha john Posted August 31, 2006 Author Share Posted August 31, 2006 The numbers still going up: 23 Yala banks hit by bomb blasts Yala - Muslim militants launched 23 coordinated time bomb attacks at commercial banks in this southern province Thursday, killing at least one man and severely injuring at least three bank customers, police said. The bombs, mostly planted in ATM booths at the banks, were detonated by clocks between 11:30 to 11:35 am. The attacks prompted all banks in the province to close its business for a day and at least five schools decided to close and released students home. The attacks were carried out in five districts - 11 in Muang, six in Betong, 2 in Yaha, 2 in Bannang Sata and 2 in Raman. Police said most of the injured were those who came in to draw cash from ATM machines. Most of the bombs were hidden in thick books, which pages carved out or in women handbags. The killed was identified as Major Sanuchart Srithong, a retired army officer. Police sources said two Muslim youths have been arrested after police checked tape from security cameras of ATM booths and saw them planting the bombs. In Muang district, 11 banks were attacked. They were Government Savings Bank (GSB), Bank of Ayudhya (BAY), Krungthai Bank (KTB), two branches of Islamic Bank, Kasikorn Thai Bank, Siam City Bank (SCIB), Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives (BAAC), Thai Military Bank and Siam Commercial Bank (SCB). In Betong, the BAAC branch, SCB branch, Kasikorn Thai branch, GSB branch and KTB branch were attacked. Another bomb was defused in time at the Bangkok Bank. He said parents and teachers had learnt that the militants would launch attacks on August 31 to mark the formation of the Bersatu terrorist umbrella group. Parents were worried of the children's safety out of concern that that schools would be next target of the suspected militants. The bomb attacks on several banks in Yala killed at least two people and injured many others on Thursday. Sanya Suwanphoe, president of the Teachers' Federation of Yala said that the attacks caused chaos among parents in the province. "Many parents rushed to pick up their children from schools. Therefore, many schools have to cancel their classes. It is mostly likely that the parents would not allow their children to come to schools in the next few days," Sanya said. The school authorities are following the situation closely before deciding whether to order the schools in the province or not. Meanwhile Wicharn Atikapan, president of Teachers' Federation in the South, said that the schools should be closed following the attacks as it has been quite a while that teachers and students become targets of the attacks. "The teaches and students could be taken hostage by the suspected militants.
