4.4 magnitude earthquake in Myanmar rattles Chiang Rai province

BANGKOK, 24 November 2014 (NNT) - An earthquake measuring 4.4 on the Richter scale has erupted in the Tachilek town of Myanmar yesterday at 6:49 p.m., sending aftershocks traveling to Chiang Rai province of Thailand.

The Seismological Bureau under the Meteorological Department reported that the quake originated about 14 kilometers northwest of Chiang Rai province and was 13 kilometers deep. Residents living in Mae Sai, Chiang Saen, Mae Chan, and Mae Fah Luang districts as well as those in the downtown area of Chiang Rai have slightly experienced the aftershocks.

Locals living in a two-story townhouse in San Sai subdistrict mentioned that they felt the building was shaking. Those residing in one-story homes had similar experiences to tell as well. According to them, the vibration was like a car passing by and the chairs and lamps were also shaking.

No damages have been reported so far, however. Residents living in both countries have continued to resume life as normal.
