I don't know, really, what they're going to get, but Thailand and some other SE-Asian countries are known to have extremely tough sentences when it comes to drugs, In the Western world this kind of crime would mean a certain amount of years in prison, perhaps upto ten, but might be considerable less also. Very high sentences are usually reserved for the criminal minds behind drug trafficking, rather than the food solders. They'd probably get a tough sentence too, yes, but there would still be a life to look forward to after prison's over. The story as reported is sketchy and incomplete, but apparently this man is suspected of being involved in theJon Bennette Ramsey murder case. For those of you who are unaware that case was a big story over here in the states some years back and it comes as a great shock that after so much bungling the police finally have a suspect. Have any of you expats residing the LOS heard anything about this? Apparently the American authorities are flying to BKK to request extradtion back to Colorado. I have only a little sympathy for the end users, but none at all for the Mr Bigs who live off the weaknesses and gullibility of both the users and the mules. The countries where these Mr Bigs live, know full well the source of their wealth but are either incapable or unwilling to move against them. Not sure about the penalty. not quite sure that we can call them poor mules ? they decided that they would do the run and knew the consequences of playing this game with the thai authority's. jesus mate, all the books about the big tiger and they rolled the dice and lost. the punishment is life in frigging prison and they still had a crack. sorry, but i aint got to much sympathy for them. dont know if you got kids or not but if they got hooked on coke because these guys got in you might think a tad different. any way , just my thoughts. cheers mate Dude: if you were living in the mountains of Peru, and had a family, and had no job, and your family was starving, and some a))hole came and offerecd you 3 K US to be a mule, you would take it and kiss his A**, and say thank you, rather than let your family starve. it is easy to judge when you sit on your fat Ar**e and make these comments, with your stomack full, some people don't have the luxury. Personally, leagalize it, control it, tax the hel_l out of it. if not, then go after the bosses, not the poor dumg mules. If they legalised it and taxed it then the dealers would not need to offer the money for mules to smuggle it. By your logic, you are saying that people would do absolutely anything to feed their family. There are millions of starving people that don't resort to these methods. It was a choice, they chose to smuggle drugs; endangering their own lives and without thought of the lives of the kids that would eventually be using these drugs. Now who will provide for their families? We all have to make choices. I don't think that the act requires any justification from anyone on this forum. I think that he means that the consequences are much tougher in some countries than others, and that they were only thinking of the consequences in their own country. Over here we've got plenty of guys from one of our colonies, the Dutch Antilles, arriving with loads of cocaine stuffed into their guts, and customs are sending them back because they cannot handle the load... hel_l, they even got training classes on the Antilles, where youngers learn to swallow bags of cocaine with carrots, can you imagine? Thinking about another comment over here, what if you are returning and a bag of cocaine the passanger next to you is 'carrying' busts, and you'll have to watch him struggling for life... There is just too much money to be made and drugs and sex have always been big sellers and hard to resist. I am not sure what will happen because these people are truly mules and I would imagine it depends on how much is found in each person--ie., the weight. In other words, they did it for the equivalent of 2 1/2 years of [minimum] wages. In the west, the equivalent would be approximately 10 times as much, $30000. I can imagine stupid young guys would do a lot for $30000 here in the west. It's the equivalent of a tuned up Civic or something like that, a pocket sized street racer. There are young uneducated unemployed guys here in the U.S that would KILL for that kind of money. And occasionally they do. I cannot see how they got detected unless they already had been fed to the police in advance. Wouldnt surprise me if suitacse go through full and a few small ones get tipped to the police... What is the point of condemning smugglers and users to countless years in prisons which are already brimming with "drug-offenders"? Isn't this dumping of pople into society's garbage bins also simply hiding the extent of the "problem" from public view? What would happen if all drugs were decriminalised? Seems to me that the rate of consumption of drugs would probably be about the same as it is now - although studies in Holland and Switzerland are ambiguous: some claim less consumption, some more addiction. What might change if all drugs were legalised/decriminalised is that corrupt organisations and regimes (Burma) would not be able to profit so shamelessly from supplying an eager market. Prices would drop as supply was regulated and taxed, so that many drug-dependent persons would not need to commit crimes to get the cash to feed their habits. The stigmatization of users would also diminish, and safe injecting practices might limit the spread of HIV and Hep C infections. This is a very superficial survey of a complex question, but this topic begs discussion of the context in which stories like this are considered "newsworthy". Or the Viagra or similar aphrodisiac found hadn't been produced by a pharmaceutical company but in a clandestine laboratory, for higher profits. I don't get it - but then.... who cares - may be next the consumption of oysters, of the 'horsepee' eggs and the like will be illegal and fill the human dumps even more.... rinohorns, tigerbones, tigerpeepee's....bears & snakes gallbladders...and all this sick stuff & chinatown comes to mind - when will there be a raid? - I wonder.... You may be surprised to know that my three members of my family have been long-term heroin addicts. All but one have struggled for half their lives to overcome their habits. One has been to jail for 4 years for drug-related crimes. My beautiful and highly intelligent daughter is still in the process of re-making her life. The illegality of drugs only made the lives of my brother, sister, and daughter even harder than they would otherwise have been. Legality would not have solved their addiction but it would have saved a family from being broken up by the imprisonment of the mother. It would have saved my brother from Hep C through sharing needles, AND if the drug had been legal it would have destroyed the mysterious allure of an illicit substance to a young teenager: my daughter. I made my comments to show the futility of outlawing drugs. I do not appreciate your personal abuse, even if you happen to disagree with my views. I have never used "hard" drugs, not because I am "better" than those you choose to label "junkies" but because I was a cautious young person unlike my more curious and adventurous siblings. I made my comment because I feel sorry for al those curious and adventurous siblings at school who got hooked on drugs. Boomee's point seemed to be that because there is a ready, profitable, and highly illegal market there will always be someone desperate or greedy enough to take the risk...quite possibly someone who is also addicted or has a big debt. The futility of this situation is in locking people up, when, as Boomee points out, there will be plenty of others desperate enough to take the same risk. I care about kids in high school, stuff all drug related suppliers in jail, for a long time, and the problem is solved! Nobody wants to go to jail, especially a tough jail, (or at least I imagine!), so, let them be an example!! If smugglers don’t risk anything, where is the end??
