Popular Post PepperMe
Absolutely ridiculous. These scams are well documented, but seems nothing ever gets done about it S0 this guy was allowed to keep 50K from the bill in his illegal bar? Or can we assume that 50K went straight into the pockets of the police and the bar owner got the more realistic 4080 baht? The police are really not interested in Thailands tourist industry are they? Popular Post Chang_paarp
It is "possible" that 8 tourists out on the lash could rack up a bin of 50K or so BUT at an illegal bar???? Come on now, the cops must have got some serious "negotiating premium" from the bar owner.
Popular Post Sparkles
Yes these karaoke bar scams go on and on and on and have been for years and nothing gets permanently resolved. The bars just wait for the next victim. Its only a week or so since a Dutchman was beaten up by the Thai thugs that hang around these places because he refused to pay an obscene bill. No point is saying people shouldn't go there. Unless they are locals or just read about it on the net how would they know ? Like the jet ski scams in Pattaya and Phuket they are still happening. What are the so called "tourist police" doing about it ? ....zip and their supposed to be helping tourists. Maybe Beetlejuice will be along shortly and we can get the full story from his family member who is a member of this illustrious group of law enforcement officers who are here to protect us mere mortals.
Briggsy
Where are these bars located? I note the bar owner agreed to return 60 K. I wonder if he actually did or did he just make himself scarce till the Malaysians went home.

Are you among those who think there's real reform happening among those who are in favor? There has been no reform only a purge of the last government. Its all make believe propaganda for the masses. I live in Phuket and sans a bunch of illegal structures taken off the beaches everything is still the same. I just returned from BKK and its the same thing different day there also. All the crap that they tout as fixing is just the same as always. Its all propaganda to get the citizens behind the coup and junta. Unfortunately Thai people just arent smart enough to figure it all out....plus they dont give a shit anyways about anything outside their own 3-ft radius.

I don't know about other countries but in the US there is double pricing. The citizens and especially the locals pay for the infrastructure to get to, and to maintain the attractions. I have a $15 lifetime pass to all US National parks. You would pay $25 a carload for every park. Even Disneyland gives a big discount to locals in appreciation of maintaining the infrastructure that surrounds it. It is the big ripoffs in the OP that don't happen in Western countries. I've never heard of it in the US, Canada, or anywhere in Europe. Prices were plainly posted and that's what I always paid. Sitting down in a bar or restaurant in Canada, the US, or Paris will give the same experience. They give you a menu with prices, you order, and that's what you pay + any lawful tax. Thailand can be stupid about ripping people off and thinking it won't run business off.
Popular Post lee b
Its discracful. But it will carry on as long as people are getting paid off to turn a blind eye and let the tourists get scammed.

thenewgoo
And now that police are aware of this illegal bar - one must assume that it has been closed down?! I mean, it can't be open for business while it's illegal right?!
