The weather, the food, the temples were all considerably different than anything I'd experience anywhere before (in North America or Europe). The Grand Palace, Floating Market, tuk-tuks, Tom Yum Goong ! Even the smells (such as they were) were all strange and, in some cases, fascinating (though I could have done without the ever present smell of dog-shit baking in the sun). I knew nothing about the "nightlife" other than that song "One Night In Bangkok" (which is actually from a musical about a chess tournament). I'd seen the original version of "The King and I" when I was a kid but didn't really remember much of it. At the time, Thailand was one of those "magical" destinations that you may only ever get 1 chance in your lifetime to go to. Almost everything about that first trip left a lasting impression on me, right up to the point where I was at the airport trying to check in for my departing flight, flat broke and facing a 200 baht Departure Tax ! (Not too mention the 2 hours spent sitting on the plane at the gate, watching out the window as guys on step-ladders were tinkering with one of the engines - whatever they did must have worked as the rest of the flight was smooth as (Lufthansa) silk.) 3 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Many people come here for work, some for health care, for others it's a matter of economics and cheap cost of living, and so on. And for longtime visitors and long-time residents, I suspect that the reason morphed over time. Whereas the first time for me was a Thai girl I met in the US, subsequently it was sex, and eventually, it just became the feeling I got as soon as I stepped off the plane in to that sickly sweet and humid air, the ride from Don Muang, and the freedom to go where I wanted, when I wanted, without the oppressive 'shoulds' and 'shouldn'ts'. After moving there, the pace of life, the challenges of getting things done the Thai way, and the little surprises of daily life were just of the few reasons I stayed. If not for my own changing priorities, and the increasing government bs, I would still be there. Can you make this one of the poll's multiple choice answers? I rest my face.
