PATTAYA: -- Last Friday afternoon a 41 year old Iraqi attempted to escape from a Pattaya Police Bike Patrol after he was ordered to pull over as he was not wearing a helmet and a subsequent search uncovered a BB Gun in the seat compartment of his motorbike.

Following a short chase, Police stopped and searched Mr. Mohammad Mihaisin and found he was carrying a BB Gun in the seat compartment of his motorbike. He was also carrying a document reportedly issued by the UNHCR, the United Nations Refugee Agency, which claimed he was a refugee and cannot return to his Country.

How is this news, and why does anyone care he has a BB gun? Did they become illegal?

Read the news article. This guy entered the country illegally, probably with a forged document claiming he was a political refugee. He has no passport and has a prior arrest warrant for dealing in pornography. Exactly the type of vermin that needs to be rounded up and either locked up or sent back to his home country.

"Further checks revealed that Mr. Mihaisin had resided in Thailand for 15 years without a passport and we discovered that he was arrested in 2008 under arrest warrant number 1357/2550 issued by the Pattaya Provincial Court on a charge of 'participation of persons to make, produce, participate in obscene movies or other tape recordings'".

How is this news, and why does anyone care he has a BB gun? Did they become illegal?

1: He tried to run off at a road check

2: The BB gun was found once they chased him

3: Further checking showed he had lived here illegally without a passport for 15 years

4: He had an outstanding arrest warrant.

Another clueless headline then. Clearly the possession of the BB gun was not the critical element of the story.

I skimmed the article attempting to find why the BB gun was significant. Thinking that was the point of the article, so I skipped the stuff about his immigration issues which apparently was the story.

I agree. The headline makes it all about a BB gun and I wondered what the big deal is. Kudos to Petercool for having the patience to read all of it, LOL.

BB are for sale about everywhere

that is not the kind that kills one when one is offended and not man enough for a person to person confrontation

Just need to clear this up in my head.

If he holds a fake letter from the UN then they will be all over him but if it is real then he is a legitimate refugee and Thailand allowed him in without a passport on those grounds.

Secondly, he may be a Kurd because what type of person was claiming refugee status 15 years ago. If memory serves that was a long time before shock and awe and Saddam was still the boss.

As the the BB gun that is just schoolboy stupidity as is not stopping when asked to.

His name is not Kurdish but he could have been one of the many Iraqi Muslims who crossed Saddam Hussein before 911. He may be one of the many Sunni Muslims that were fleeing Iraq during the time before Saddam's regime fell.

"Dangerous weapon" a BB gun for god sake....I saw children the other day with BB guns.....

Another wonderful example of Thai journalism....

I guess it was a boring article and they had to make it more important....!!!

Why then didn't the headline reflect this?

How do I get one of those UNHCR letters? And if it had been a slingshot instead all would have been ok?

Those letters, even if real, do not guarantee haven in Thailand and the fact that he tried to run away was what led to further checks whether he had the BB gun or not - or anything else.

about as dangerous as a sling-shot.

Here in Thailand much more dangerous, you are likely to get shot by a policeman thinking that gun is a true firearm, not a BB gun. They must make quick life and death decisions, their life sometime means your death.
