Treasury Department to deal with encroachers on Koh Tao

KOH TAO: -- The Treasury Department has set up a multi-agency panel to reclaim Crown Property land on Koh Tao off the coast of Surat Thani province from resort operators and other encroachers.

Mr Chakkrit Parapanthakul, director-general of Treasury Department, said today that field inspections by department officials of Koh Tao, a popular tourist destination, had shown that several resorts had encroached on the department’s land.

The panel comprises officials from the department, Surat Thani provincial administration and from other related agencies. The panel will be split up in two with one focusing on encroachers on watershed areas and the other concentrating on slope areas – both of which are prohibited for occupation and utilization.

Mr Chakkrit said that, however, the department would allow leasees of the department’s land with improper contracts to report themselves to department officials to have their contracts fixed.

Also, the department is to put in order its 50,000-60,000 land in Suan Poeng district Ratchaburi which have extensively been encroached by resort operators and individuals.

The land used to be controlled by the military which has leased many land plots to individuals and business operators. But in recent years, the land was transferred to the Treasury Department.

Land tenants who used to have land lease contracts with the military are required to renew their contracts with the department if they are to continue utilizing the land plots.

Half of resorts on Koh Tao face eviction

Bangkok: - The Treasury Department plans to evict about half of 128 resorts on Koh Tao, Surat Thani.

Barely 10 per cent of buildings and plots have legal sanctions while most resorts do not have proper land lease agreements, department director general Chakkrit Parapanthakul said.

So the Treasury Departmen will evict 60 odd "resorts"????.....I'm sure that the local governers and influential polititicians will all have twiching sphincters with this news.....Not!

From the sounds of this island.....everyone should be evicted, including the thug families that supposedly rule the place......and the island should be left as a nature reserve.......!

Well, let's hope that none of "The Untouchables" will be affected. They are already overwhelmed with all the payoffs and bribes necessitated by their antics of late.

Leasing of public land ... money going to government is not a bad idea ... can help build infrastructure ...at least the money won't be going into the pocket of some Hi-so A-hole who got something for nothing.

So, nothing is going to change except some money changing hands. But I like the idea of a nature reserve, even though it would never happen this side of eternity.
