Tourism booms in North despite rains

BANGKOK: -- Local tourism officials said on Monday that a steady flow of tourists has continued to arrive to Thailand's northern region, particularly Chiang Mai and Mae Hong Son, despite downpours of rain that have caused some rivers to overflow and flooded wide areas in several northern provinces.

During the past week, most Thai tourists traveled by road, while some 20 per cent of tourists were from European countries, including the Netherlands, Germany, France and the United Kingdom, according to reports provided by local tourism officials.

Train and bus services heading to North have reported a rise in bookings despite the continuing rainfalls in the region.

Tourists are, however, advised to seek information on weather conditions with Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) local tourism offices, especially before taking a jungle rafting tour.

Flash floods and rafting are not compatible activities, according to TAT.
