Jai Dee
Increase of para rubber's productivity in Satun The agricultural sector in Satun Province in July 2006 showed improvement, especially in the productivity of para rubber. However, the fishery sector was sluggish mainly due to the continuous increase in oil prices. Mrs. Preeda Aungsupanich (ปรีดา อังสุพานิช), a finance official in Satun, said there was an increase in the consumer demands in July, and one of the main supporting factors was the relatively high prices of para rubber. The prices of para rubber were high because of its high global demands, and its collected value added tax, which was determined by the revenue office in Satun, was increased by 24.88 percent. At the same time, the expenditure of the government budget rose by 94.32 percent, while the tourism industry grew by 16.43 percent. The inflation rate decreased from June by 0.48 percent, but the figure was higher in comparison to the same period of last year by 5.99 percent. However, the slowdown of investment, the sluggishness of the fishery sector due to the oil price crisis, and the trade deficit of three million baht with Malaysia, were some of the negative factors that affected Satun’s economy. Nevertheless, the unemployment rate remained low. Source: Thai National News Bureau Public Relations Department - 05 September 2006
