Marriage to hi so girl

From my understanding all Thai girls think they are Hi so?.?

Yes, sooooo true. even the ones who's grandfathers were peasant rice farm workers, and are working as bar girls in Pattaya. I see them in Central shopping for brand name clothes with their temporary BFs and their noses so stuck up they can't see where they are going.

I have this theory

If you have to tell/show off/try to appear rich/hiso/talented/skilled at something.

Then youre not

True abilities are noticed/acknowledged naturally

Any decent middle to upper class Thai woman would never consider getting involved with a farang, in fact most Thais believe forming relationships with farangs is a step down the social ladder.

Not true in the case of old money Thai families IMO but maybe true for 'new rich' middle class perhaps

Have to laugh, that many farangs believe Thai girls with even the remotest of Chinese ancestry are Hi-so, especially considering probably the majority of Thai people have a Chinese ancestor in their family tree somewhere, including women of ill repute and the underclasses of Thai society.

Any decent middle to upper class Thai woman would never consider getting involved with a farang, in fact most Thais believe forming relationships with farangs is a step down the social ladder.

I think that if a farang has to buy his way into a relationship with a Thai woman, says a lot about the lack of amour propre regarding all parties concerned. Anyone willing to pay millions of bahts for the hand of a Thai woman, has to be a very sad individual indeed.

I have to disagree, a great many think it's a step UP the social ladder but depends on the groom. If he is twice her age and has a beer belly, then I might agree with you.

However, at the end of the day it's all about the social status of the partner, not what his ethnicity/skin color is. Certainly even a moderately rich older foreigner is going to be looked at in better terms than a dark-skinned poor Thai of Cambodian/Lao/Mon heritage who works as a day labourer or in a factory for 500 Baht a day, for example.

It's def become more acceptable for well heeled Thai girls to marry a foreigner but it helps if he's seen as coming from good stock, just like any other Asian country.

Most beer belly Brits wouldnt stand a chance, especially with their negative attitude

My son is planning to marry a hi so girl in BKK this year.

After the marriage he is planning to settle in his mother in laws home & start a business to allow him to live in Thailand & support his wife.

Since starting the wedding plans, his wife to be family keeps asking for more & more money, even after agreeing to earlier plans.

Also, I am left out of any planning & have now been asked to fund the marriage.

So far his brides family have offered nothing material, just favours from their friends.

I think my son is being taken for the proverbial runaround, what do you think?

There aren't that many Hi-Sos in Thailand. They certainy wouldn't be asking for money and your son wouldn't need a business if she were a Hi-so.

Many here think if they aren't a bar whore, they are a Hi So.

Wife insists she's not a hiso. She says it's usually new money brash women and "someone who can't work properly" ie career or job position through parents or connections. They spend their life going shopping and to the gym. "Spoilt show offs without something to show off"

That's her take.

Seems like there are various definitions of HiSo

Is it white skin Benz driving daddy's girl or old money inheriting traditional girl?

Most of the people driving the Mercedes Benz or BMWs are driving financed or leased vehicles. Hiso people do not have to lease/finance their vehicles. BTW, my favourite way to put a snot nosed kid diving a MB in his place is to casually mention that the model he is driving is the one used for taxis in Germany, and that in the middle east the more expensive models are used. I like to say, I prefer the BMW 5 series taxis over the C & E class MBs. This can usually achieve the much desired infliction of loss of face,

ALL hi sos are old money.

Not really. Some hi so's are medical specialists or occupy managing directorship fronting positions for large multi nationals. They don't necessarily have old money. The reality is that there are about 50 or so established families who have been around for the past century. These are the true old money hi so segment. Everyone else is a nobody.

Conflicting definitions of HI-So

# female friend uni grad working for multinational company says hi-so means anyone with a lot of money regardless of education or lack thereof.

# male friend working for major thai airline refers to hi-so also as those with high education example; doctor / lawyer

There should be no conflict, being a member of high society certainly does not require you to be educated.

( And getting into law/med school is expensivethumbsup.gif )

Add dentist school, around 31Million Baht.

Beer belly Brits are a dying breed.. Literally

Bangkok has changed alot over the last 15 yrs. The happy go lucky foreigners are tolerated but are less welcome. Kind of feel sad that era has almost come to an end.

There's still a club near Nana that all the older Brits go to with their Thai wives (check Inn). I hope it doesn't disappear with them.

My take is that the "old" system where old men make money from selling their house in the UK ( got divorced ) and move to LOS to carry on being married but with a Thai is on it's way out.

In the future, IMO, men that can afford to buy a house won't want to move to LOS because it doesn't fit with their life style- decrepit infrastructure etc. Don't know what place will take over in the future, perhaps Burma or Vietnam.

I think LOS is at the start of a pivot towards China, and it will profoundly change everything in LOS.

Why would you pay for your sons wedding.  Tell them you dont have any money for the wedding and it is up to the happy couple to pay for everything. Stay the hell out of it. Sounds like they have pushed you out already so let them do as they please, at their expence. And let them know very clearly it is their bill to pay. And watch them change their plans once the money is coming out of their pockets.  If your son is old enough to get married he needs to grow a pair of balls and take care of it himself. I just got married last month in my wifes home town, about 70 guest my cost about 30,000 baht. Her parents not very well off so I was happy to foot the bill. Had a small 30,000 baht sin sod for show, plus some gold we have bought for ourselves. All returned. I respected them for doing that so I handed the 30,000 baht back to them. They treated me fairly so I treated them fairly . I just asked they use some of the money for their health needs.

Supposed Hi-So here will carry their status internationally.

The ones I know from schooling here and abroad (Thais) over 20 years ago that are perhaps deemed Hi-So are nothing more than cheeky spoilt upstarts who are not close to being Hi-So (not wishing to disrespect although I have).

Now in their 40's, they have more luxury international houses, Mercedes and BMW's you can justify.

One very wealthy girl perceived as Hi-So married to a foreigner (and has a Thai gik on the side) is in the tabloids from one of the country's most established family's, is not Hi-So.....although the media will have us believe she is.

The real true high society in this country do not marry foreigners, irrespective of how good looking and wealthy that western man is.

I believe there are only 3 Thai families and individuals within those families that are truly high society. They only married Thais of same class, the best blood and pedigree.

another keyboard expert....LOL
