Thaksin to announce soon whether to break: Somchai

BANGKOK: -- Caretaker Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra will probably make known his stance on whether to take a break from politics very soon, according to Somchai Sunthornvut, the caretaker deputy interior minister.

Somchai said Monday the party had not presented its electoral policies as the election date was still uncertain.

Thaksin had signalled he wants to support the work of the junior members of his party. "He has already decided who would be suitable for the post of the prime minister," added Somchai.

There will be no problem if Thaksin takes a break for a year as he could still help the party's candidates in the election campaign. It would also be a good opportunity for Thaksin to visit people around the country to get more support for the next election, he said.

Somchai said the suitable people for the position included caretaker deputy prime ministers Somkid Jatusripitak, Surakiart Sathirathai and Chidchai Vanasatidya.

Perhpas the Nation got some real clues to the future:

Disabled Burmese muse guides our superstitious PM

Why do Thai leaders visit Burma so often? To meet ET.

Before you draw conclusions about extra-terrestrials, it might help to know that ET, alias E-Thi, is an astrologer and she knows all about Thaksin Shinawatra. She even knows about the bad and good things going to happen to him.

According to an informed source, ET has been to Bangkok on several occasions. "She would be flown in to meet top leaders and give them personal suggestions," the source said.

ET is also much sought after by the first couple of Burma's ruling junta — Senior Gen Than Shwe and his wife Kyaing Kyaing — according to the latest issue of The Irrawaddy.

ET is a disabled Burmese woman whose speech impediment makes her suggestions incomprehensible. However, her sister translates the blurry prognostications for those seeking her counsel.

Those who have interacted with ET said that she has telepathic powers and the ability to foretell the future. One local journalist said that she correctly mentioned the sequence of numbers on a banknote inside his pocket.

It is an open secret that Thai politicians, especially Thaksin, have used astrological skills from Burma and Cambodia including black magic.

One well-informed source said the prime minister, several ministers and politicians have long respected ET.

"The normal story is when you first meet ET and take out a banknote from your own wallet, ET would be able to read all the serial numbers without looking," said the source.

"Then, ET would speak 'broken English' to convey her message. At one time, the queue was as long as 10 (a cabinet meeting) until ET had developed a headache and had to turn down many waiting admirers.

"ET is known to be very accurate for a short-term event prediction (less than one year)," added the source.

According to The Irrawaddy, before overthrowing then prime minister Chatichai Choonhavan in February 1991, Thailand's conspiring generals were rumoured to have made a secret trip to Rangoon to seek advice from an astrologer. So, they made offerings at a temple in order to ensure a successful coup and retain "energy".

They returned to Thailand without touching the earth, as instructed - always walking on red carpets, travelling by car and aircraft, and then to the seat of power in Bangkok.

Thai PM will not seek-re-election

BANGKOK (AP) - Embattled Thai leader Thaksin Shinawatra will not seek another term as prime minister after upcoming general elections, a senior member of his party said Wednesday.

The comment came from Chakaphan Yomchinda of the Thai Rak Thai party, who interviewed Thaksin last week for a three-part television programme.

"The prime minister did not speak clearly about his political future but as one of his subordinates I can read his signal clearly: He will not take the position of prime minister after the next elections,'' Chakaphan said before the first part of the interview was aired on TV Channel 5 on Wednesday.

Thaksin has been widely accused of corruption, abuse of power and seeking to erode Thailand's democratic institutions.

Months of street protests forced him to temporarily step down from his position, after which he returned on a caretaker basis pending elections which will probably take place before the end of the year.

Chakaphan, who is regarded as a mouthpiece of the prime minister, said Thaksin would talk about his political future in the interviews scheduled for Thursday and Friday.

The Wednesday interview focused on the prime minister's family, hobbies and accomplishments over the past five years.

In only a short passing reference, Thaksin said the "prime minister may change after the elections.''

Thaksin, who is currently on a foreign tour, said in the interview that his life has been "uncomfortable'' since an alleged attempt to assassinate him last month.

Five members of the army have been arrested in connection with the alleged plot to explode a powerful bomb near his residence.

Some critics accuse the government of cooking up the plot for its own political purposes.

"I lead my life normally, but it is uncomfortable since I have to follow rules about security. I have to think about my security and the dignity of the country,'' he said.

"You can imagine what the reputation of the country would be like if its leader was assassinated.''

Thaksin said his security team advises him to alter his daily routine and change the venues of his golf games.

Thailand has had no working legislature and only a caretaker government since Thaksin dissolved Parliament in February for snap elections in April.

He called the polls three years ahead of schedule in a bid to defuse the mounting protests against him.

New elections have been scheduled for Oct. 15 but there are widespread doubts they can be organized in time.

New election commissioners were only put in place last week.

Thaksin's party won the April elections, but the three parliamentary opposition parties boycotted the polls and millions of voters marked an abstention box on their ballots as a protest against the prime minister.

Because a minimum vote rule was not met in some constituencies, winners could not be certified, and Parliament could not be convened.

Thai PM Thaksin says considering a successor

BANGKOK (Reuters) - Thaksin Shinawatra, Thailand's prime minister who has kept his country guessing about whether he will keep the job after a looming election, said on Thursday he had still not made up his mind.

Thaksin, said he might pass the job to one of his trusted aides "who I think have been sincere for almost six years". But the former telecoms tycoon, accused of corruption and abuse of power, charges he denies, said he was still debating what was the best option for the country.

"I am contemplating now if I should step aside for them to have a chance or I should continue to stay on," he told an army-owned television station in an interview.

"Perhaps, if not being the prime minister is better, I may leave and work for a foundation," Thaksin said.

DL seems to be a very busy man, with all these pre-recorded TV/radio-interviews, conversations with trusted TRT-helpers, letters to the faithful, etcetera.

Could it possibly be a double, trotting round London, carrying mountains of shopping ? :D

And when he returns, helping his family with the luggage & carry-ons from their free-spending trip, will he be paying the 40% import-duty at Customs, which we were asked to pay, last time we came home from London ? To help finance all these new projects, the country will need all the millions they can collect, from those well-able to contribute.

Or will all the goodies remain in his London home ? Hope that nobody accidentally got these under the VAT-Exempt-for-Tourists Shopping-Scheme ? :o
