Chiang Mai: An Australian father and his son were attacked and injured by a group of Thai men, prompting them to flee into a temple in Chiang Mai's Mueang district early Tuesday morning.

According to Khaosod, the father was identified as Peter Hanberg, 60 and the son as Jesson Kusell, 18.

The paper said the two were attacked and fled inside the Huafai Temple at 6 am.

Pol Capt Jirasak Nakham, an officer on duty of Mueang Chiang Mai police station, was informed of the incident at 6:40 am.

He sent a team of patrol police and rescuers from Central Chiang Mai Memorial Hospital to the temple.

The officials found that the father was hit at his head and body while the son was stabbed below his left chest. The two were under care of monks inside the chapel.

Rescuers rushed them to the Central Chiang Mai Memorial Hospital but they refused to receive treatment there. They instead took a tuktuk to Vej Chiang Mai Hospital and received treatment there.

Mueang Chiang Mai police chief Pol Col Weerayut Prasopchokechai said the 191 police emergency center Chiang Mai was alerted at 6 am that two foreigners were assaulted in front of a 7-Eleven shop in front of the entrance to the Chiang Mai Land housing estate at about six am. But when police rushed there they did not find anyone.

Police later learned that the two foreigners fled inside the temple.

Weerayut said police found that the father and son drank and ate at the Kinnaree Karaoke shop on the Chang Klan Road Monday night but they refused to pay the bill, claiming the drinks and foods were too expensive. As a result, they engaged in a quarrel with the shop's employees.

Weerayut said police would later interrogate both sides before taking further actions.

There's a few Chiang Mai karaoke shops that prey on tourists and are well known for their scams. Sit down for a couple hours and you get presented with a bill for 30 or 40,000 baht. Then they beat the crap out of you if you don't pay up. They've been doing this for a long time and have beaten up a lot of tourists with no repercussions.

Ridiculous, it is time for a full and proper investigation of these karaoke scams and the protection

they get from the police (alleged co-owners). Yes all Thai Visa readers know the game and avoid

these places but the rank and file tourists do not. It is fine to investigate food stalls that charge

35 baht instead of 30 but this and scams (jet-ski) like this is were the focus should be.

There should be CCTV coverage from the 7-11 so we will see what the investigation

uncovers. Charges or a cover-up. coffee1.gif

Another cases of an Aussie coming to Thailand and acting like a fool when alcohol is on the table. So where did the 18 year old son get his alcohol from? Of course his father. Did the police ask the bar about this subject?

Tourists beaten and stabbed, but police feel the need to have a chat with the Karaoke bar before taking any action, as opposed to making arrests and then conducting interviews....... A stark reminder that we're in a third world country hiding behind a facade of shopping malls.

Right in the area that has a string of notorious overcharging episodes. So not really surprising.

They should make their mind up to either do something about it or not. Otherwise there will be more stories like this of course.

For those who have decided that the 60yo is pumped up with steroids and showing his bum should tack another look at the picture and take another guess which one is the father.

Going to a dodgy area in a strange country to drink until 0600 is always going to be fraught with danger and I'm not making excuses for the duo's idiot behaviour, but most aware people here know of this type of massive overcharging scam that happens all too often in this country.

Blame the crooks who present the massive bill at the end of the session and then try to extract it with knives and lumps of wood, not the foolish victims.

I think it is time for Thailand to have the law like in europe, where you are obligated to show the price of every product and obligated to sell at that price.

It will avoid surprices cheatings discussions fightings.

It happen to me many time also thai restaurants wher you know average food price is 50 B but they count you 90

or as everyone know, a market where thai buy the shirt 200 B but you 500.

honest vendors with honest prices make happy customers or happy tourists.

I think both sides are guilty of breaking the law, the 'customers' for not paying the bill and the establishment for taking the law into their own hands. At least, that would be the way I would read it.

Ulic made a good point earlier in the thread that everyone on TV (regular viewers anyway) are aware of these karaoke bar scams, however your average tourist generally goes out to enjoy themselves with eyes full shut. Trouble usually kicks off when the the over-inflated bill arrives on the table.

Easy in hindsight to say that prices should be checked before ordering....................wink.png

These karaoke are owned by influential people. They prey on tourists and are very dangerous to go in. No repercussions when you are presented with a bill of 30-40k for a few drinks. Stay away!
