Italian consul for Phuket opens Samui office

KOH SAMUI: The Italian Honorary Consul for Phuket, Dr Francesco Pensato, now also heads a new consul’s a new consul’s office on Koh Samui that was recently inaugurated by Italian Ambassador in Thailand Francesco Saverio Nisio.

The new office is to give assistance to the Italian community living on Koh Samui as well as to the Italian tourists that visit the island.

Koh Samui is Italian tourists’ second most-visited island destination in Thailand, second only to Phuket.

Dr Pensato, as the Italian honorary consul for Phuket, is also responsible for the Southern Thailand provinces of Phang Nga, Krabi, Trang and Satun, as well as Surat Thani, Patthalung, Songkhla, Nakorn Sri Thammarat, Narathiwat, Pattani and Yala.

Joining Ambassador Nisio and Consul Pensato at the inauguration of the Koh Samui consul’s office was Gen Chalit Thinthanee, Commander of Police Region 8, which includes Surat Thani Province and Phuket.

Gen Chalit has a long history of serving in tourist-heavy precincts. In 2000, he was superintendent at Phuket Town police station before bring transferred out of province.

He returned in 2004 to serve as superintendent at Kathu police station in Patong, before taking up another posting. In 2007, he returned again to serve as a deputy commander of the Phuket Provincial Police, before taking up the post as police chief of Phang Nga province.

His current posting as Region 8 police commander gives him ranking superiority over other tourist islands in the area, including Koh Tao, where British tourists David Miller and Hannah Witherbridge were murdered last year.

Also present at the Samui consul office inauguration were Surat Thani police chief Col Chinarat Rittakananon; Samui district police chief Col Paitoon Krajajang; and Naddapen “Nokie” Dummananda, president of the Koh Samui tourism association.

The Italian Consular Office of Koh Samui is located at 1714-9 T. Maret Lamai, A. Koh Samui, Surat Thani 84310.
