Looks Like The ( Late Night ) Life Has Been Sucked Out Of CM

At the outset, must point out I m not a regular on the very late night bar scene, but occasionally, no harm in a bit of a late night drink with friends or whatever. However, the other night I happened to be quite late watching England beating Australia at Cricket, and on the way home, not having had a drink all night thought no harm in a late night beer somewhere. By this time it was about 12.30am.

Well, what a miserable City Chiang Mai now is at that time, unless presumably youre a young Thai and know the University/ Younger Persons hangouts. Jacks Van, always a source of a good quiet drink is closed, Both Hotshots and Bubble in the Pornping Carpark are gone, and I understand the late night disco at the back of Lucky Bar ( too late for me) is also either closed down or forced to close early. It being 12.30am, most if not all the Loi Kroh type bars were either closed or closing, including Number One Bar, again, previously a fairly laid back late night place with decent beer.

Not being of the generation to appreciate Zoe or Spicy, which curiously still seem to be able to operate when others have been forced to close, is that it for CM now from just after midnight, a ghost town! Is this due to the City Authorities trying to "clean up" the downtown area, or is this the "military clampdown", or what?

Whilst not advocating a free for all at dubious places, CM now seems like a miserable and depressed place for expats and tourists from midnight onwards. My youngest son ( age 35 and single) is visiting on holiday in september, and will for sure be looking for a bit of holiday fun. Is it now a case of drinking secretly in dark corners or behind shuttered gates, if so, not a particularly good attraction for "normal" tourists who just want a convivial late night drink whilst on holiday here???!!!

Do many 'normal' tourists stay out drinking long after midnight?

Absolutely nothing wrong if youve had a meal, say, at Chez Marco, or Giorgios for example, and you ve left there at say, 11pm, in spending another couple of hours with old friends or whatever at somewhere like Jacks Van, or Number 1 Bar.....not an every day thing, but a thing a lot of normal people do occasionally, its called " a night out " and nothing wrong with it. We even have a volunteer dedicated driver so no problems with drinking and driving.

Ever since that woman mowed down the cyclists in the early dawn light, there was been a concerted effort to shut down the late-night/early morning drinking places in the central city. Apparently, she had been up all night drinking in these places with friends.

Hubby often goes out for an early morning walk in the Old City at 5 am (and even earlier) and he reports that nowadays there often is a police check at Thapae Gate in full swing at that hour. In the past, he said the early morning walk was more interesting watching people stumbling out of the after-hours drinking establishments, lying on the curbs, getting ill in the streets, etc. Those glory days are gone.

Pat...another poster stated Number 1 is now Ladyboy City....so you're not missing much. The decline of MM and LK has been noticeable for at least five years, and there is pretty much of a consensus on that here, and its demise is separate from the recent crackdown, but hurt even more. While Dayli (soi 11) never stayed open past about 1, anyway, the cyclist killings seemed to have been the straw that broke the camel's back, and for lack of a better word...the authorities have become "militant" about closing at 24:00. BTW, the killer's BAC was reported at about .08ish (or less), which clearly is not an indication of a 100 pound girl, who drank the night away. Terrible. reckless driving habits, which are amplified with alcohol, are the killer around here.

Meanwhile, up here by CMU, the bars next to me remain closed, but you can still buy at the 7-11 right by the back gate.

Late night drinking is very convenient for tourists, who like myself, have traveled 11-14 time zones to get here, or even the 6 or 7 for the Euros. It's a great way to get acclimated.

At the risk of introducing a tangent, this "problem" makes it seem like my kinda town. This time last year there was an American lad in Nong Khai who actually owned a really nice flat in Chiang Mai and was paying to stay for a month in Isaan with his flat empty just to get a rest from the late night noise.

[if you were a bike rider and wanted to be able to go out early on a race bike with a gang of people it really has to be Chiang Mai, doesn't it? To avoid the smog would planning three months somewhere else do it, or is it just not that predictable? As I say, at 25 I used to regularly drink myself sober - I once drank until 0500 and then did 140 miles on the bike - but at 50 "quiet, dead and draconian punishment for those who kill cyclists" looks pretty good].

My guess is the OP was only referring to the Loi Kroh/tourist traps.

Plenty places around town, as previous posters mentioned. Yellow zoe is not so bad for a 35 year old single man. And there is always Riverside and Goodview....along with the Nimenheimen places. And the large nightlife area near Tawan Daeng.

Three months would be about perfect....about March 7 until June 7.....I've seen some great Mays here; it was hot as He&& this year, with a late start on rainy season. I went to America for the whole month of April (where it seemed really cold), but about half of March was bad, then May. Rain is your best friend here, when it gets hot, and the air gets bad.

I was at Neighborhood with friends last night. The place was packed when they literally turned the lights off at midnight. We were allowed to finish our drinks in the dark but then had to clear out.

If you want to tie one one in a place with drinks, pretties, food, music and light you better get an early start. Fortunately we did.

Not that I mind, particularly. But from your photos above, assuming they are reasonably current, it would seem that the local authorities there aren't giving much mind to the supposed government prohibitions about alcohol brand advertising, including the one supposedly outlawing beer-brand girls, etc etc...

I looked into it. The tuk-tuk driver wanted way too much money.

Do many 'normal' tourists stay out drinking long after midnight?

Sad trolling fail.

Nope. Genuine question.

Most normal tourists in Chiang Mai have spent the day walking around temples in the hot sun, or visiting an elephant camp, or hiking around on Doi Suthep, etc etc.

Sure, they go out for a drink, but really, what proportion of them are left standing after midnight? I'm guessing not very many...

Normal tourists are torturing elephants and sponsoring drugged up tigers - I'll take the drinkers

As I sit here this morning and read this, I'm not sure if I feel "left out" or just "amused". I've been living in CM for 7 years, and I don't know of a single place mentioned in these posts. Not a one. That's due, more than likely, to the fact that I don't drink. I know of hundred of great (and not so great) little restaurants scattered over the north and north east from my monthly bike trips (prior to my stroke), but can't tell anyone where a single bar or club is in CM. I know there are some in Chiang Mai Land, but according to my wife, those are pretty much "Thai Only", and they don't really care for falang. In some of my night rides around CM, I've seen various karaoke bars, but never paid much attention to them. I don't need some pretty telling me what a "hansum man" I am, while I get slammed with a bar bill that could cover my house payment.

At the same time, I know there are a lot of people who, as has been mentioned, like to have a late night drink without all the "party scene" and loud noise around them, and I feel bad for them not being able to. Nothing wrong with that, if that is what they like, and use it to relax or unwind.

I guess the only thing any of us can do is try to ride this out and see where it goes, but from what I'm reading on here, and hearing from a few others, things aren't going well.

Wont last that long(bars closing early)nothing ever does in thailand, but i can understand the thai police response to that horrendous accident.

CM bored me to tears. Nearly dropped to my knees to kiss the pavement on my return to Pattaya. No, I'm not a monger. Happily married to a Thai lady.

The best thing for a good sex industry is a bad economy. No reasonable job options for the lower class. The Thai economy was doing well, improving. I think the current state of affairs, will push the country back 50 years. Expect the sex industry to improve.

I'm with you Biker dude. I frankly don't understand why it's so darn important to be able to party past midnight. There's plenty to do all over town before then, so I'm just fine if they shut everything down by midnight. As for Loi Kroh, the city should just bulldoze that entire strip.

Apparently there was a bit of a commotion at Zoe in Yellow a few weeks ago. A drunken foreigner was getting agitated and a fight ensued. The security staff tried to quell the disturbance as they know the military will use any excuse to close the place/area down.

Long story short, the foreigner has since died. Zoe has been told to close for an undisclosed length of time. They may be allowed to reopen but must do so under a new name. Im not sure of the logic or principles behind all this but the area is very very quiet at the moment.

Things move in mysterious ways

Maybe a whole new `entertainment` area will open up out of town somewhere, where the business can continue unhindered by changing rules and the temperance brigade. Then watch the CBD implode....

I suppose it depends on what you call normal, but in the likes of CM, Bangkok and Pattaya.

I do believe most tourists from Western countries do stay out long after midnight.
