Sayings of the Buddha

Reading Buddhist literature, acquiring knowledge thereof, endeavouring to apply in my own life has been a very enjoyable experience.

Following I will supply some & welcome your contribution thereto.

BTW, Why am I such a handsum man?

The Buddha was one cool dude. He had it all BUT upon seeing a sick man, an old man & a dead man & lastly a monk, he walked away in search of the absolute truth - for the benefit of mankind.

There are other great men whose thinking has provided inspiration to me eg Mahatma Gandhi, Nehru, Mohammad, Freud,

THE CAUSE OF SUFFERING IS NOTHING BUT SELFISH DESIRE.

This statement got to me. It suggests that suffering is self-inflicted. By choice - ignorance?

LIFE IS UNCERTAIN, DEATH IS CERTAIN.

True but many think that we should not suffer - God will be our shepherd. Death - that is a dirty word.

HE WHO CONQUERS HIMSELF IS THE GREATEST OF ALL CONQUERORS.

GOOD IS RESTRAINT IN DEED; GOOD IS RESTRAINT IN SPEECH; GOOD IS RESTRAINT IN MIND; GOOD IS RESTRAINT IN EVERYTHING. THE NOBLE PRACTISES RESTRAINT ALL POINTS IS FREED FROM SORROW.

WHEREVER FEAR ARISES, IT ARISES IN THE FOOL, AND NOT IN THE WISE MAN.

Mahatma Gandhi: "The world is enough for everyone's needs, but not ever enough for one man's greed."

Members seem very shy today. Why is that?

The Venarable Dhammananda's writing has been a very positive influence on my life eg

"What hinders us from TRUTH is our selfishness, our pride, hatred and ignorance."

"The enemy of mankind is selfish craving."

"The Buddha taught that all our miseries arise from the wrong sort of things: more money for self indulgence, power over other people people, and cherishing the idea of living on forever after one is dead."

Not a saying of the Buddha but nevertheless - FRIENDS

Facebook - I have 9282 friends - I am special.

For me, quality is far preferred to quantity=Reduction of problems.

Best friend - SELF!

Bye

Never heard that one.

In fact, there are many many I have not heard.

I just keep breathing in & out.

Belch

Pass wind

Say hello to Jesus

Go to heaven

Sit on the right hand of God

Pass wind again

DIE

I have a mind which is trying to kill me (AA philosophy).

My mind needs a stern trainer - one who keeps it in line. Otherwise, my mind will bolt.

Its favourite activity is comparison ie another v myself.

Its criteria is warped to such an extent that I am always a loser.

I am surprised!

Reading Dr Dhammananda's book, I noticed the following: p90 -

'if you do not have any reliable friends to associate with, it might be better to live a solitary life."

Why surprised ? Don't you agree with it ?
