george
SONGKRAN FESTIVAL No showing off, city hall tells women BANGKOK: -- Women wearing spaghetti-straps or strapless tops will not be allowed to join in the Songkran water-splashing festivities, which city hall is organising. This is to protect Thailand's reputation and that of the women themselves. City clerk Nathanon Thavisin made it clear yesterday that women wearing exposing blouses would be stopped from entering Songkran fairs, which all Bangkok district offices are holding. Police would politely escort women in such dresses out of the venues. Mrs Nathanon said city hall was serious about the ban because the Songkran festivities welcomed both Thai and foreign revellers and were reported across the world. The ban would be especially enforced on Khao San road, the backpackers' venue now famous for its water-splashing festivities. Denying the ban violated women's individual rights, Mrs Nathanon said this dress restriction was imposed last year and 90% of the female participants at these fairs were suitably dressed. Songkran fairs in Bangkok started yesterday and will continue until April 15. They are being held at several venues including Khao San road, Rama VIII bridge, and Santi Chaiprakarn park. City hall has advised people to use public transport to lessen traffic jams. Kittipong Kittayarak, director-general of the Department of Probation, issued a warning against drunk driving. He said drunk drivers would face fines and also probation and community service. Drunk drivers who caused damage would be sobering up behind bars. --Bangkok Post 2004-04-

Axel
It's hot over Songkran and the water throwing damages the dresses. So my recommendation, go top-less, which is better than spagetthi and or blouses. I promise, I will not look

Next those bright sparks at City Hall will be banning wet T-shirts and checking all girls for bras at the entrance to Khao San road. Come to think of it, I might even apply for a job like that. On second thoughts, nah, some of those hairy arm-pitted, tatooed farang shielas would put me right off my khao tom breakfast and I'd soon call in sick. ..::LegalAlien::..
I'd like to see them try to enforce that in Pattaya... I'm fairly certain that a good 80% of the female population here doesn't even own something with more than about a foot of cloth and a few stitches There would be a VERY empty streets... Bangkok Barry
Another example of the goverment restricting freedom in Fun City. Now people are being told what to wear, or the heavy arm of the law will be on their (naked) shoulder. The interesting thing is that they had a phone-in poll on tv on Wednesday morning, and most people were in favour of the rule. Probably the same people who voted down spaghetti straps in Siam Square last year. Can't let the country go to the dogs, can we. Every generation has their problem with adults. With mine it was long hair, and my father actually forbade me wearing jeans because then they were only worn by riff-raff. By the way, does this apply to falangs too, or is it one law for the Thais and another for foreign sheilas.
englishoak
Thought there always had been a dress code in Thailand against showing too much skin unless at the beach. Dos'nt seem to be such a harsh rule to me as wet clothes do tend to sag. They are after all a modest people. For once the law is doing the right thing in keeping with Thai culture. Besides the Thai women are lovely enough without having to stoop to falang standards and show almost all. Theres always the gogo bars for that if your desperate to see some flesh. And It should apply to Falang too as it's their country and we are guests.Plus seeing too many fat falang wobbling about in next to nothing is embarrassing to all. ASIC
We have seen more ridiculous bans in THailand over the last 3 month than the entire Singapore saw in the last 30 years. At the same time Dear Loosers popularity has dropped from almost 80 to close to 50. Bring on the bans I say! ASIC
farang62
Here in Samui locals don't wear strapless tops , but a lot of Farangs do and most shouldn't. If all the regulations keep up, how will our boys in brown cope?

Businessman
What do the law makers have against naked shoulders? Should they focus on the breast...or maybe they do!! Just another political slight of hand, enforcing morality of covered shoulders, while drooling over thin wet blouses and exposed nipples! Seems that these perverted senators are as clever as alway! I am sure you will see them out with cups of ice water, searching for a thin blouse to douse.. while ensuring shouders are covered to protect the moral fiber of this great nation On the serious side... I would guess that girls that want to expose themselves is a personal choice. The shy / "proper" girls, I am sure, have the sense to cover up. I don't think the government's policy is protecting the innocent, it is supressing the adventuresome. Let the girls pick.... com'on ladies, show us what you will! It is OK if the clothes sag, as long as what is underneath is nice and firm. I assumed the rule did apply to farangs as well, otherwise it is pointless. Perhaps the goernment bods have fear of large farang breasts? Some throw back to being weaned to early/too late? I did not understand the bit on dirty water later in the article. How exactly does the use of Dirty Canal Water promote opportunities for sexual molestation? Or had the Post reporter had too much of the "amber liquid" before writing the article? If all the regulations keep up, how will our boys in brown cope? How long do you stay here? So you've never seen a thai woman in a sarong? This is a very "strapless top" Concerning falangs, on a holiday island you've got to think different, don't want to say that it's always a pleasure seeing them half naked, the pleasure factor is about 10%. Last year everything was as usual, but the water throwing was less aggressive than in previous years. Don't worry to much about the boys in brown, they also want to have fun. plachon
The only exposed flesh that should be covered up this Songkhran is that of beached whales (usually lobster red in colour), that insist on showing the rest of humanity their ample girths and folds of lard in totally unsuitable locations in Thailand. The beach is one thing, but when displayed on the streets, I'm all for laws on banning it or calling in a Japanese whaling boat.
shedend
The boys in brown will be very busy during Songhran as they will be dealing with drink drivers and people throwing water at public transport so the stats improve with road accidents and last but not least looking out for females in strapless tops. Uuuummm I wonder what the boys in brown will be volunteering for.

Or had the Post reporter had too much of the "amber liquid" before writing the article? Good quote. I read this 6:30 a.m. and decided no more amber liquid for me. So seems I was ok, just reading nonsense. Or let's go for a swim in Klong Saen Saep and see if anybody will be molested. Perhaps no such luck for me. NedKelly
Earlier in April there was a report inthe Bangkok Post about a Spaghetti farm in Suphanburi. I feel sorry for them with all these bans because they will lose business. Ask Dr PP. He will agree. Also, too right about some of the farang you see in places like Samui - bearing their bodies on the beach.......makes me puke.........after all this time in Thailand seeing mainly smaller bodies it is a gross sight to see a filthy fat sunburned farang sheila with tits like malakaw swinging free for all the world to see.......it really is offensive !! Some guys are not much better with their sluggoes (for those non Aussies - sluggoes are swimming costumes of the brief variety which show the bits a little bit too clearly). Some guys are unfortunately endowed with a set of <deleted> a Spanish Bull would be proud of......ugly site indeed !!
dkstoney
We're just not going far enough. Women should be made to wear head scarves and clothing which does not allow the barbarian invaders...er...tourists...to see a single inch of their skin. We'll let their eyes be exposed, but only so we don't have to waste our precious time leading them around like blind mules. Oh yea, and on Songkran, the women should be kept indoors. If anyone knocks, they can talk to them through the keyhole. Should we ask the ladies what they think about all of this? Naaaawwwwwww, screw 'em. h5kaf
Perceptive as usual, Ned Kelly is correct. I would hope that this ban is just for farang women as the beautiful firm tits of the Thai ladies are a wonder to behold whether covered in water or any other clear fluid. In stark contrast the huge swinging mammory glands of the fat foreigners (usually Aussie and Germans) banging against their knees is a fearsome sight which should not be tolerated. thaigene2
You guys are putting me off me pudding!..yuuuaaaauuuk. Thankfully that stereotypical image of Western women is slowly being erased from my memory banks, or at least it was.. Now back to the original string. I guess the authorities feel they need to protect the virtue of Thai female innocence...another double-standard, and probably class-based at that (e.g. it's okay for those dark Isaan girls to shoot ping pong balls, but the lovely and saintly middle-class Bangkok girls must keep their shoulders covered at all times - who knows who her father might be!). I'd like to open a bar and call it University Girls, with of course the super-sexy black skirts and white tops, but it would probably be shut down for the above-stated reason. I reckon punters would pay a double bar fine for the pleasure!
