Wild gaur killed in palm plantation

KRABI: A 6-year-old wild gaur weighing more than 800 kilogrammes that strayed from its herd was tragically shot and killed after it wandered into a palm plantation in Krabi province earlier yesterday.

Forestry officials and police are in the process of locating the hunter that shot the animal so that charges brought against him.

The animal was shot in a palm plantation in Ban Nhong Mad village in Plai Phraya district.

Authorities from the Bang Phan Forest Ranger Unit went to inspect after being alerted.

They managed to retrieve the carcass of the 6-year-old wild gaur and transported it to their headquarters for examination.

The animal was hit by nine shots believed to be from shotgun.

The fatal blow was to the right hand side of its neck.

They speculated that the animal had probably strayed from its herd in the Khao Sok National Park in Surat Thani province and had wandered into the palm and rubber plantations located along the borders of Krabi and Phang Nga provinces.

It was reported to have been sighted in the plantations for more than two weeks and villagers report that it was a docile animal allowing many of them to approach it.

Chief of the Klong Phraya Wildlife Conservation Office, Meechai Aisoon, stated that he had filed official charges for the killing of the protected animal with the Plai Phraya police station.

He said authorities now knew the identity of the suspect and efforts are underway to locate the man.

The killer will face charges of illegal hunting and killing of protected animals which is a direct violation of the B.E.1992 Wildlife Preservation and Protection Act.

They still have wild animals that haven't been shot and eaten? Amazing!

How is it that in the US, in places like Northern California, Oregon, and Washington state, the deer and elk are so plentiful that they are road hazards. Driving up highway 12 from the East side of the Cascades during the winter after dusk, I've at times had to slow down to a crawl on the highway. Driving at the speed limit was dangerous because of the herds of deer along the side and in the road. They can make a mess of your car if you hit one. If you hit an Elk, chances are your car is totaled.

So, why can't this ass-backward country implement conservation programs, that hunter's willingly follow, because we know if we don't shoot every deer and elk in sight year round, when hunting season arrives, there is a darn good chance of bagging your yearly deer and elk.

Western folks can defer self-gratification better than the locals? Maybe.

Guar...that's a beautiful, powerful animal.

I'm sure that jackass that shot it will face a whopping 500 baht fine, well, unless his was using an unregistered firearm: 500 baht for killing the Guar and a year in jail for the illegal, unregistered firearm, which if illegal, is now buried or tossed in some lake or river. Or not.
