KOH SAMUI: The Ritz-Carlton as announced two sanctuaries of luxury in Asia in partnership with YTL Hotels, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve in Niseko Village, Japan and The Ritz-Carlton, Koh Samui, Thailand.

The Ritz-Carlton, Koh Samui will be developed in the region of Plai Laem in the Northern tip of the island, well-known for its white sand beaches surrounded by the emerald waters of the Gulf of Thailand. The hotel will feature approximately 187 luxurious guest rooms and pool villas with a collection of dining, wellness and recreational experiences and facilities on the pristine sun-kissed beachfront. The Resort will be located at the north-east end of Koh Samui in the stunning Choeng Mon area.

When styling and designing a Ritz-Carlton, we are extremely conscious of the surrounding and abundant natural beauty which makes people fall in love with the destination,” explained Humler. “We want guests to enjoy and discover the extraordinary diversity and beauty to be found in this part of Thailand.”

At the official signing ceremony today, Dato’ Mark Yeoh, Executive Director, YTL Hotels said “We have had a long standing relationship with Marriott International since 1995. This expansion into Thailand and Japan is a continuation of our shared success over the years. The Ritz-Carlton, Koh Samui and the Reserve in Niseko Village will elevate the stature of the two highly sought-after tourist destinations.”

Niseko is home to the largest ski resort in Japan, and is known internationally for being one of the world’s leading ski destinations. The New York Times recently listed Niseko as one of the top 20 places to visit in the world, and Forbes Travel ranked Niseko among the world’s top 20 ski resorts.

With only 50 guest rooms, the ski-in and ski-out Ritz-Carlton Reserve will be the first in Japan and is scheduled for completion in 2020. The resort will be located at the heart of the all-season Niseko Village, which is highly lauded as one of the world’s best ski resorts, taking its place alongside St Moritz, Switzerland and Aspen, Colorado. With spectacular views of Mount Yotei or Ezo Fuji (named due to its resemblance to the iconic Mount Fuji), Niseko Village boasts some of the best ski slopes in the world and is famous for its dry champagne powder snow. During the summer a diverse range of outdoor recreation include golf, trekking and horse riding.

Upon opening, the Ritz-Carlton Reserve resort will be the fifth property in Japan for The Ritz-Carlton, joining Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto and Okinawa. The hotel will also be YTL Hotels’ 4th hotel in Niseko.

“Ritz-Carlton Reserves feature signature, one-of-a-kind boutique resorts positioned in unique settings, each with a distinctive personality and sense of place reflecting its history and culture,” said Herve Humler, president and chief operating officer, The Ritz-Carlton. “A refuge from the expected, Ritz-Carlton Reserve is for travelers seeking to discover a singular location and peerless resort that will offer guests’ exotic, hand-selected ‘hideaway’ destinations in a relaxed, casually elegant atmosphere. Niseko is a natural choice to complement our existing exclusive portfolio.”

They have a a hard enough time supplying Electric to current demands & they are adding more & more resorts with zilch of a thought to infrastructure.

Haven't you seen the upgrades to roads , drainage and electricity ? Water being supplied from mainland with infrastructure in place

Why so negative ..

Nothing happens overnight ...

This is so typical of the powers that be, on Koh Samui. Develop, develop, develop. Is there going to be a traffic mitigation plan put into place? No. Is there going to be an environmental study done? No. Is there going to be some sort of contribution to the community? No. Is there going to be some sort of waste management system put into place? One can only hope so. The traffic problems on Samui are becoming a big problem. The water pollution issues are massive. The waste management issues are massive. The water shortages, and electric outages, are legendary. The lack of law enforcement and lack of traffic safety are known the world over. The island appears to be moving in the direction of SW Bali. Perhaps another five years or so, until they have complete gridlock, since the island is completely dependent on one road. The foolish government of Surat Thani rejected a monorail project, that was going to be donated by a Danish company, as a pilot project. It was to be a 54 KM. monorail, around the entire island. An $800,000,000 project. Free of charge. It would have taken a lot of pressure off the ring road, and given visitors an alternative to the horrific taxis on the island, and some sort of public transportation, which is completely lacking due to the staggering lack of vision of the local leaders, and the mayor. Did it happen? No. Why? There were no kickbacks to be earned on a free project. Absolute Samui mentality. The island of Samui is perhaps one of the least progressive places on earth. There is zero creative juice within either the local government or the state government. The island continues to manifest the great sound of a hoover vacuum. Take all you can, and give nothing back. Samui is one of the worlds best examples of how NOT to build and develop a tourist island. It is starting to feel like an overused dish rag. Few are putting any energy or money into maintaining the natural beauty, the beaches, the water, or the environment. It is becoming an incredibly sad place to spend time. Spending time on Samui makes me want to cry. The place has so much natural beauty. And the local people just do not give a rats ass about the place.

The secondary issue I have always had with Samui, is the lack of quality service. They want to build more five star hotels, but they cannot find enough people to work in them, who are able to offer five star service, speak decent english, offer some knowledge about their wine lists, etc, etc. Samui is becoming known for five star resorts, that offer three star staff, and three star service, due to the relatively incompetent staff.

Negative ? You must be joking. They are trying to catch up to upgrade to what it should have been 5 years ago. As for power , you must have a very short memory about the source & condition of supply to the island. It is that good that I still get blackouts 2 to 3 times a week,

Is it the large construction side at the street corner opp. The Sala? Or is it the construction on the beach next to the Sala which belongs or formerly belonged to the Dusit Group? Or is it the enormous construction side before the Tongsai Bay between Tongsai Bay Road and that formerly secret beach? Or one of the constructions after Q-Signature? Or is it somewhere else?

Ritz Carlton isn't for the cheap Chinese tourist but a magnate for high-end tourists. The Koh Samui location should be very rewarding to the local economy.

More likely corrupt politicians, mafia henchmen and their weekend squeezes... The only local businesses which benefit are the brothels - drivers, bodyguards etc. all need their jollies too...

Bit of a double edged sword for Samui but as it won't bring the reputation down - a good thing.

Frankly, it is not possible to be negative enough, about the direction Samui is headed. Nobody there is proactive. No leader (especially the impotent Ramnate) is demonstrating vision or looking toward the future. Now that I have left Samui, after being there nearly ten years, I see just how little local pride there is there. The locals do not care. Most just want the cash. The leaders do not care. They just want the cash. Few seem willing to re-invest in the island. There is such an astonishing lack of money being spent on improvement. Sure, a little work on the roads and the sewers, and the electric grid. But, after such massive growth those were necessary and expected. I am referring to beautification campaigns, environmental work, water clean up projects, green energy projects, much needed public transport with electric powered vans, and trams, etc. Nearly nothing is being done. It is literally the land of no progress. The island that has been left behind. The island that does not care.

After all of the work on the grid, I was still experiencing blackouts up to two times a week, and for up to eight hours at a time. The local administration should have been ousted over that alone. I could go on for days, and days. It is simply not possible to be negative enough about Samui's future prospects.

Rubbish issue solved?

Could not agree more, with all you say. Disgusting and even the courts are becoming uh, well I can say no more. ph34r.png
