BANGKOK: -- The Energy Business Department has picked Fuel Pipeline Transport Limited to develop a fuel pipeline system for the northern region, said Energy Minister Ananataporn Kanchanarat today (Monday).

The minister today presided over the signing of a memorandum of understanding for the expansion of the fuel pipeline system for the North between the Energy Business Department and Fuel Pipeline Transportation Limited (FPT).

FPT was chosen to extend the fuel pipeline from Bang Pa-in district of Ayutthaya to Lampang covering a distance of 570 kilometres. The works will be divided into two stages: the first stage from Bang Pa-in to Kamphaeng Phet province covering a distance of 350 km and the second stage from Kamphaeng Phet to Lampang for a distance of 220 km with oil depots in Phichit and Lampang.

Minister Ananataporn said the government would provide technical support to FPT and to arrange for a permit to the company. On the other hand, he said the investor would be required to conduct environmental impacts assessment (EIA) study for submission to the Office of Natural Resources and Environment Policy and Planning for approval within next September.

Construction of the pipeline system is to be completed in December 2018.

As for the northeastern fuel pipeline route, the minister disclosed that two companies namely TRC Construction Pipeline and the SC Group had shown interest to invest in extending the fuel pipeline from Saraburi through Nakhon Ratchasima to Khon Kaen for a distance of 340 km.

The existing fule pipeline in Saraburi is owned by Thai Petroleum Pipeline. The investment of the two extensions is estimated to cost 20 billion baht and this will help improve the country’s competitiveness in energy supplies.

"this will help improve the country’s competitiveness in energy supplies."

Thailand is a net energy importer. So how does this pipeline affect its competitiveness? It certainly will lower transport costs for FPT that will increase its profit margin. Good for its shareholders, meaningless to everyone else.

Let go of those negative waves, my dear Srikcir.

Don't you think the North should be more properly serviced with fuel? Do you want to deny the North the possibility to expand? Do you want to deny the North the fuel which may help in wintertime?

Besides other positives what about taking many large fuel tankers off the road ? That in itself will make life better for many thumbsup.gif
