British family in plea for rare blood to help graduate fighting for her life in Chiang Mai

I am 59 and donate A- blood at Banglamung hospital every three months when I am in Thailand. Never been able to donate at Private/International hospitals.

I have called the number and will fly up to CNX at my expense if I can help

Must be somewhere in Thailand we can contact. i am happy to travel to Chiang Mai but i want to make sure I can donate before I go. I donate regularly in khon kaen but they have restricted me to once a year because of my age. Not sure the reasoning behind that.

I was turned away, as they have had sufficient donations for Lucy! thank you to all the kind souls who were able to donate! Noted that according to the Thai Red Cross site they will accept blood donations from persons up to age 70 so we were headed out the door before your update came in.

Red cross is in the moat near Thapea gate. They are open for blood donation from 9am. Yesterday it lokken that many people offered to come.

Poster is correct anybody over the age of 50 is not accepted as a blood donor in Thailand.

I have been donating blood every 5 weeks for over 40 years and when I arrived in Bangkok to make a donation I was told,"Too old".

End of story.

When i needed blood 2 years ago Khonkaen hospital accepted blood from an American friend of man who was 63 at the time.

LONDON: -- A GRADUATE is fighting for her life after a horrific crash during her dream gap year trip in Thailand.

Lucy Hill was left with a broken pelvis and brain haemorrhage after being thrown from her moped when she collided with a car in Thailand.

Family and friends of the 21-year-old are desperately appealing to find people with her ‘a-negative’ blood type as she requires more blood transfusions to save her life.

She and friend Lauren Hall, 19, flew out to Thailand on January 3 where the PE graduate was set to travel through Thailand, Australia, Vietnam and Cambodia.

She is now expected to receive more blood on Monday, but her family are facing a race against time to find more supplies.

Her mother Alison has flown out to stay by her bedside at Rajavej Chiang Mai Hospital, alongside her traveling partner Lauren Hall, 19.

Lucy’s father Phil Hill, 54, said: “We were told a car collided with the moped, the driver was travelling on the wrong side of the road and knocked her off her moped.

I just read that the Red Cross has turned away people over 60 years of age that went to donate....

If you go to any Red Cross you can donate to the patient with her name and hospital.....

I am sorry for her condition that she is in.Please for others having friendsor relatives visiting Thailand, caution them against diving any type of motorbike during their visit.here.Only the very experience rider should ride a motorcycle here and even they will tell you the reason that they survive is they know how dangerous it rely is.

I'm pretty sure you cannot donate at Rajavej itself. Blood collection in Thailand is centralized under the Red Cross blood service for quality control reasons. In many oarts of the country donation can only be made at the Red Cross, but since this appeal specified Maharaj I assume it has been verified it can also be done there.

The Thai Red Cross is handling the national blood bank but many mayor hospitals handles blood donation stations, I have personally donated at the mayor provincial government hospital in Tak, Phichit, Kamphaeng Phet and Sukhothai provinces. In Sukhothai province there are 3 large hospital and they all has blood donation stations.

I am A negative, but live in Bangkok and cannot normally donate blood in Thailand as I lived in the UK during the 80's/90's - due to CJD concerns. I had my staff try to call the hospital and then the Chiang Mai Red Cross to see if I could donate anywhere and they said they had sufficient blood for her.

A few years ago when I was sixty one a Chiang Mai hospital refused to let me donate blood to our child's nanny who was seriously ill. I was told that anyone over sixty would not be accepted. I asked for a new form and filled it in in front of the hospital staff and took two years off my declared age. The same nurse then escorted to a room to give blood. I was thankful for the kindness and our nanny made a complete recovery.

People have been queuing outside a hospital in Thailand to donate blood after an appeal to help a young British woman with a rare type went viral.

Lucy Hill, 21, suffered a broken pelvis when her moped was involved in a crash with a car in Chiang Mai on Saturday.

Friends appealed online for donations of A negative blood which she needed for a transplant following surgery.

Her father said it was "humbling" volunteers had been queuing two hours before the hospital opened.

'Waiting game'

Phil Hill said the response had been "overwhelming".

Lucy, who is from Bury, has had a transfusion and it is now "a waiting game", he added.

Lucy's friend and travelling companion Lauren Hall posted a plea on Trip Advisor for people with the A negative blood type in Thailand to donate after the hospital ran out.

Mr Hill said his daughter is in a stable condition at the Rajavej Chiang Mai Hospital following emergency surgery for a bleed on the brain and has had titanium plates fitted to her broken pelvis.

Her mother Alison has flown out to be with her.

A fundraising page set up to help the family has seen offers of support from all over the world.

Sean Thornton, from Liverpool, wrote: "I arrived in Chiang Mia only last night! I donated blood and just hope & pray this young girl's life is saved."

Emily Singh said: "I am Rhesus negative and I'm in Bangkok, my husband and I are going to look at flights to Chiang Mia."

when you go to donate they will check it for you as well as your hemoglobin (to check for anemia). So you get free blood typing and anemia check. And if you aren't A neg they'll still be happy to take your blood.

I am A- but live in Pattaya although after reading one of the comments I am not sure my blood would be acceptable as I am 68 years of age, if you can confirm my blood would be acceptable I could go to Pattaya hospital for donation of blood.

I went to the hospital in CM today, was told I'm too old at 66. Met some young English people there, wouldn't take theirs either as they had recently been to Vietnam. They kindly said they would let the family know through FB that I'm available to help in any way I can as I live in Thailand. I think my age wouldn't matter to them if blood is needed. Called her friend's No. also but only got an answering machine in Eng!and.

PS. I have a donor card in my home country but they wouldn't accept me here either for that....too old they said again. If I rightly recall 55 was the max age they said, or around d that anyway.
