The Forgotten Isaan Farmers and their problems.......................

OP your comments are widely inaccurate as usual.

OP says ''A dentist at a hospital has only 10 minutes per "30 baht patient". If there's a root canal treatment necessary, or something else, they have to see a dentist at a clinic. But they can't afford it to go to a clinic. So they can't get it done and lose more and more teeth. Weird, or?''

My wife is a dentist in a govt hospital and laughed at this comment. She does root canal treatment everyday and it takes longer than 10min and NO they dont get turned away. Thats a load of B.S

Not all English teachers in Thai schools are illiterate. The wifes mother is one and she speaks very good English.

Is your post based on any evidence or just opinion only??

There is evidence because exactly what OP said happened to my missus.

Again, a poster, another TVF member with an educated wife who has got such a noble profession being a dentist at a government hospital !!!

I don't believe your post, because it's a fact that the government hospitals only have 10 minutes per patient, root canals are not done under the 30 baht scheme and "special dentists", also called Endodontists are needed to get such a difficult job done.

And even in much more civilized countries can things go terribly wrong. It happened to me in Europe and I was 6 months in total pain.....

These "special dentists need two, or three more years of education than an ordinary dentist to understand the whole procedures, they are not just dentists. Your wife seems to be a super hero, a dentist who does root canals every day, no other dentist at a Thai government hospital does. Impressive.

Please tell your wife that I was laughing about her. Most of them get turned away, but people like your wife ( but I have my doubts that she's a real dentist, too many points just don't fit here) give them their address of their private clinic to get this done.

BTW, not all clinics can do a root canal treatment, it's a procedure that can't be done in one day. Is it possible that you don't really know what a root canal treatment consists of?

Endodontists are dentists who have completed an additional two or more years of advanced residency training in the diagnosis and management of diseases and disorders of the dental pulp, and in the diagnosis of dental pain; their focus is therefore on saving teeth. In order to make a proper assessment and accurate diagnosis of which tooth is affected and exactly what is causing the pain, a thorough history and examination is necessary, together with a radiographic picture (x-ray) of the tooth or area.

You wrote that your wife does that every day at a government hospital? Buffalo dung. I've got the Thai SS and was turned away at the Sisaket hospital, as well as the Sapphasit in Ubon. Both dentists told me that they only have ten minutes per patient.

You can have an extraction, but not anything that takes longer. Even with the Thai SS insurance, not the 30 baht scheme.

Of course are there exceptions, people who're related to your wife and people who pay your wife, not the hospital.

Now I didn't say that your wife is corrupt, but she's Thai. And why would she let you know all the tricks? You called my post bullshit and wrote a bunch of statements that can't be true?

And I also have my doubts that your wife has read my post(s). Who knows what kind of job your wife does, but she's obviously not a dentist at a government hospital.

Is she maybe a nurse who knows all and everything? Please don't answer this post, I don't want to talk about some imaginary dentists who do root canals every day at a government hospital.

It seems that you shot yourself in your leg. Lies have short legs these days. Please be honest and tell us that you've just made the dentist story up.

Are you really such a bad guy that you "created an educated wife" who's a dentist with unbelievable skills.

Able to do difficult and impossible stuff, even against the hospital's policy?

no offence to you OP but you are weird. Majority of root canals can be done by a competent general practitioner dentist and not by a specialist. Its a relatively easy procedure according to my wife. Good one for copying pasting your google search. It makes you look really intelligent... ha ha. I think you have to be the most hated member of this forum. A lot of people bag you out. You should quit this forum and try somewhere else. This is my feedback to you.

" Majority of root canals can be done by a competent practitioner dentist".

My point was that this isn't done at a government hospital on the 30 baht scheme. My dentist, an experienced older woman in Sisaket city doesn't do root canals and she told me why. She worlds daytime at the Sisaket hospital and has 10 minutes for each patient.

What can be done and what is actually done at a government hospital are completely different scenarios.

Did somebody step on your toes? Oh, according to your wife doesn't make you more intelligent.

Why don't you just stop reading this thread and shut the fragg up? Nobody told you to read these words. And I mean nobody.

Ask your wife for clarification, please.

You really are a sad rude old man lostinissan. I challenge you to be brave and do the right thing and appologise for your last remarks oh and to fess up just how many aliases you have and don't say ask mods to check your IPS we all know the work around on that. I doubt very much if you will do either of these things hust copy and paste another load of drivel under another of your aliases.

Lostinisaan or KevinB or whatever other call signs you are using on here several I suspect. I thought this may become a great thread however as you insist on trying I emphasis the word TRYING to be little or be down right rude to anyone who tends to disagree with you. Also all these quotes from the internet just proves really how you love to see your own copy/paste work. So I'm out of here.

Sutty, I'm with you! This Kraut has so many aliases, too many to count. He/She likes to hear themselves talk! Putting out BS on

Thai's! If he/she doesn't like it here they can go home! So, good Bye to this Stupid Topic!

Of course if you don't like what the OP writes you could put him on your own ignore list and not bother to read any of his posts. I am sure he won't be upset and neither would I if you didn't respond to the topic.

It is such a stupid topic that it only has 92 responses so far. How many responses do your posts get? I have no idea as I rarely bother to read them.

Is it forbidden to Google something about freaking root canal treatment, if there's a guy with a lie?

I'm neither KevinB, nor do I want to discuss such babyshit. I t was about poor farmers and their problems, not about me. Full stop.

Are you really such a bad guy that you "created an educated wife" who's a dentist with unbelievable skills.

Able to do difficult and impossible stuff, even against the hospital's policy?

LostinIsaan, now you are making me a little angry. I have recently had a lot of dental work done in a government district hospital. I have a fairly good idea of what goes on, having gone through three root canal treatments, one bridge, one crown, and two pulled teeth, in the last year. The way things work, at least at my hospital, is you go very early in the morning, if you go too late you will miss the quota for that day. You wait until your turn comes up, and yes you will only have about ten minutes in the chair. During that time they will decide what further treatment you need, if any, and schedule you for an afternoon appointment, usually 3 weeks to a month later. At the afternoon appointment they spend as much time as needed, usually 1 to two hours, and it seems from what I could see, they only schedule one afternoon appointment per dentist. At the hospital I go too, they do root canals. You may be right about the ฿30 scheme not covering root canals,I don't know, but I do know the hospitals do them. As for the villagers not having toothpaste, most washrooms I have been in have it. I do know when my wife was young they cleaned their teeth using leaves and salt, but they always cleaned them, and my wife has never had a cavity. I have also never heard of a suicide in my village, or an HIV, patient, although there may have been one or two of them, but men, not local girls returning from Pattaya to die. Generally our village seems to be doing very well, just about every time I change my walking route past an area I have not been for a couple of weeks, I see a new house being built or improvements on an old one. People in our village do not seem to be lacking money, or for that matter the villages around, the same can be said for the district town. Your reality is completely different from mine. Perhaps south Isaan is a lot poorer than further north,I don't know, I have never been there. I live at the corner of Mukdahan, Roi-et, and Kalasin Province, 7 kilometres off highway 12. It is mostly a rice growing area, one crop a year, with some cassava, rubber, and eucalyptus, as cash crops. I have no idea where the money is conning from, but they seem to have enough. If this area is called a poor area, then what do you call some of the areas in Laos or Africa.

Are you NUTS? My wife's family farms rice in Ubon! None of the above applies! Yes, they are poor, but happy! My wife went to

work in Korat at 18 and then she got her undergraduate degree at night! She took the Civil Service Exam after graduation and was

Number 2 in NE Thailand. Got a great job in the District Admin. She now has her MBA and is C-7 at 45. Her Teeth are beautiful

and I asked about brushing her teeth on the farm. Her Grandmother made toothbrushes and toothpaste at very little cost, if any.

so, don't put this CRAP OUT!

Farm girl with undergrad degree who comes in #2 in the region ... you already know from those facts alone that she and perhaps her family are unrepresentative.

My gf's father is only in his late 50s and has none of his original teeth left. I was told it was because for years they did not have toothpaste... used some sort of powder. The family has slowly done better over time, but with one rice crop a year, it's a long slow climb.

Geez, I live in a small village and work in another small village. Everybody has a newer car than me. New houses are sprouting up everywhere I look. My students all go home in cars not motorbikes. I can't find anyone to do some work for me for less than 1000 a day as they all have plenty of work. The new tesco in town is packed and so are the new restaurants. I don't know what part of Issan I am missing. Different strokes.

Probably wrong part of rural Isaan.

Rural Isaan village = no Tesco, no 7/11 within the next 50km.

it looks to me you write about a situation 1980 -1990 but sure not about todays thailand (isaan )....as far as I know most kids have tabletcomputers are fat fed...and enjoy a better rate of literacy than europe....

if there are down and outs its because of too much sanuk gambling drinking too much jaba and girlfriends....u find people like that in every village....but most of the rest are well off nice houses and big pickup 4WDs ..well I agree mostly on loanes but well in the west is quiet the same....

my Gf a physical therapist coming from ssk working near chiang mai....her family ricetraders very hard working good hearted thai people honest and wealthy but sure not rich...devouted buddhists....

the isaan as a area was poor in the 80s 90s dead poor no doubt but through the influx of western mens money who married the daughters of the isaan the area developed much to the surprise of the learned and wealthy in bkk....

see another post on this forum:

I'm missing something... you talk about what you believe Isaan is like now ("most of the rest are well off nice houses and big pickup 4WDs", etc.) but later admit that you have never visited Isaan. I can only wonder where you draw your conclusions from, then.

My gf's family (mother, father, 3 'kids') are rice farmers. Small house that they have managed to extend (2nd floor) over time. No pick-up truck. Mom goes to market on an old rickety bicycle. Dad has a beaten up old motocy. They have one crop per year. The rest of the year, they buy peanuts and corn from village and sell it in them in their own village market at a minuscule profit. I doubt they have any savings. The hut on their farm is close to collapse. They are vegetarians and don't drink or smoke. Devout Buddhists also. The son (23) went to technical school and now works in a factory in Rayong. One daughter works in a minimum wage job in a department store in 'the big city' (Ubon) and my gf has a small beauty shop. No drugs or other dysfunction. As you said, in was much tougher in the 80s and 90s ... I'm told that the parents didn't eat on some days. But things have improved over the last 15 years or so. That said, there are smaller villages nearby with much poorer families. My gf sometimes brings food and stationary supplies to the schools there as she remembers how challenging her life used to be.

Your gf is a physical therapist and her family are rice traders. That's a whole other (better off) slice of society. You just don't know...

p.s. maybe 8 years ago, I knew a girl whose family lived as squatters (illegally) in a shack at the back of a truck parking lot in Bangkok (near the airport). I thought she was joking until I actually got to stay in the place. No running water. Shower outside using rain water collected in a huge container. Have the photos to prove it. These are the real poor ... don't even own land to sustain them.

^^^^^ totally agree Docno [emoji1433][emoji1433]

The thread is about farmers not rice traders and physiotherapists.

I only visit the village a few weeks at a time but see very few cars and pickups. Very many have very little.

Falang Khinok you should go take a look at a poor rice village in Sisaket sometime, maybe you will be enlightened?

I feel that there is a difference between the villages in northern part of Isaan (around Udon Thani) and the south-eastern parts (around Buri Ram / Ubon) and thus for some it seems the villages in Isaan doing great and others think the opposite as the villages in different locations paint a different picture.

In my IL's village, they seem to doing OK - most of them are working offshore or in other parts of Thailand. Also farming going on. Not many new pickups, but paying for children's future. I hear everywhere that this kid goes to this university or that higher class school. So, it seems, nowadays, many think about education. Increasing rates of students at universities from Isaan reflect that.

My wife says, "15,000 THB in Isaan village is not much". I always want to believe her but in reality I think it's very much. On the other hand, as a household number, 15,000 THB could be low, e.g. 2-3 children earning each 15,000 THB + the parents additional 10,000 THB farming = already 40,000 THB in that household (regardless if the children working in f.ex. BKK).

In the near "villages hub" there are new 2-door pickups seen everywhere at market time, but the ratio to motorbikes is low (approx. 30 motorbikes / 1 car) and I would say only 5% of them are SUVs (Fortuner, Pajero, etc).

The comments that "a dentist at a hospital only has 10 minutes per 30 baht patient, and that "government hospitals do not perform root canals" caught my eye as well.

Today, I went down to my local government hospital and asked them if they performed root canals. They definitely do, they showed me the price schedule which by the way was the same for foreigners as for Thai people. For a molar, a root canal was 2900 baht, the post was xxx and a crown was xxx for a total of about 7000 baht. The dentist, who spoke excellent English assured me that government hospitals throughout Thailand provide root canal service. The government hospital does the work there, and does not farm it out to local clinics. I recognize that 7000 baht is a lot of money for many people, but I think the comment that government hospitals do not perform root canals is misinformation, and I wanted to set the record straight.

As far as being limited to 10 minutes per patient, I did not even bother to ask the dentist if this is true. It takes 10 minutes just to put the protective equipment on the patient, have the patient rinse his/her mouth and find out what the problem is. If a patient has a cavity, is the OP saying that a government hospital dentist has only 10 minutes to install that metal brace around the tooth, drill out the cavity, prepare the almalgam material, fill the cavity with amalgam, taper the filling so that the bite is correct, and check that the clearances between the teeth are correct?

"The Root Canal Northeast Side Story."

My point wasn't about root canals at all. Now let's split hairs, got nothing else to do.

My input, that a root canal won't be done at a government hospital, when you're in the 30-baht scheme, nor when you've got the Thai SS card doesn't seem to be a lie, don't you think?

I wrote what two dentists had told me that neither a crown, nor a root canal (and plenty of other jobs) will be covered by my insurance and that they only have 10 minutes per patient. (10 minutes in Thailand are a little bit different to 10 minutes where I come from)

None of my relatives, with the exception of one wealthier guy, who made it to the boss of a transport department in a bigger city, could and would afford to pay 7,000 baht for a one tooth fix.

Mom and dad in law receive 600 baht each, because they’re over 60. Picking chilies for others, 3 baht for one kg is the only way to have some extra baht. 1,200 baht for all of them? There’s only one rice crop a year.

My brother in law after some “electroshock therapies” that didn’t work well needs help and needs a lot of attention. He wanted to commit suicide, but survived. His wife had left him with the two boys, who also have to eat and need clothes and so on.

He didn’t want to go back and tell his parents what happened. But the suicide attempt went wrong and now he’s handicapped. Do you think that anybody would even pay 7,000 baht for a root canal treatment when you’re in such a situation?

I dropped some food in the village off today and looked into the fridge and there’s nothing in it.

N O T H I N G.

Now please do me a huge favor and stop the freaking dentist stories. It wasn’t about dentists at all and when I needed a crown for 6,000 baht, I could feel it at the end of the month.

I don’t know anybody in the whole village, including neighboring villagers who could afford to pay 7,000 baht to keep one tooth.

The attempted suicide would have left him with a hospital bill also. Attempted suicide, or suicide, is not treated free under the 30 Baht scheme. And neither are people involved in traffic accidents. Hence why Por Ror Bor insurance is compulsory.

Lostinisaan, it seems to me you are writing to an European audience, that has no idea what life in Isaan is all about, and that you are picking all the worst case scenarios in order to get sympathy. I am sure one can find similar situations in Bangkok, as one poster pointed out, also in the west. I don't know about Europe, but in North America it is only the few that have dental insurance, and many, many people can't afford a route canal. You could probably cheery pick in the west and come up with many situations, where the poor are a lot poorer than the poor in Isaan. Remember in Ehurope and North America, the homeless are subject to far more severe weather conditions than the homeless in Isaan. Taking my village, where the closest 7/11, Tesco Lotus Express and Big C Market, is 22 kilometres away, and the closest city 80 kilometres away, so it's pretty rural. The farmers farm one crop of rice for their own consumption, very little is sold, if they have extra they will usually give it to those few who don't have any. Some farmers grow cane, or cassava, or rubber, or eucalyptus, as, cash crops. It is not a rich area, but no one goes hungry, they all have cloths on their backs, a roof over their head, and a motorcycle, and a lot, a new motorcycle. When I came to the village 13 years ago, I think counting my house, there were 3 western style houses, now there are way more than twenty, and new ones going up or being renovated it seems every week. 13 years ago I could count the pickup trucks on one hand, there were no cars, and I think 3 old Ford tractors. Now there is no way I can count the amount of pickups and cars. The Thai family across the street from me (2 drivers) have two cars and a pickup. There are more tractors than I can possibly count, sometimes I think my family is the only one without one. Lostinisaan, I would be hard pressed to find the type of poverty you depict. I'm sure there is someone some where as poor as you describe, as there are everywhere, but they're sure not many. You must live in a very, very poor section of Isaan, that does not exist in my area.

Please Google Sisaket province. The lowest salaries, no factories, only shopping malls in the capital city Sisaket created some jobs for some people.

I'm in no way trying to get sympathy. My sympathy is for the relatives who live under those circumstances.

15 years ago, there's at least a Songtaew to Uthumphon, the next town, about 8 km away from my wife's village. I remember rides on an old motorbike to the "Sun Heng", the only existing shopping mall.

Yes times have changed, but not for the majority of farmers in this particular area. The only and very old motorbike is falling apart. There's no money to buy a new one.

They can dream of scooters, or tractors. There's just not enough money to buy the simplest things.

Big-C, Tesco and Makro created a lot of jobs, but they won't take an uneducated farmer, would they?

I've seen a couple of brand new pick ups but the majority is back at the banks, because people couldn't afford it.

I haven't seen any other foreigner in the village in the last 15 years. Of course have I met a few people who had a wife from there and visited the relatives, but nobody who'd built a house there.

I'm in no way looking for any sympathy. I beg your pardon.

In Sisaket there are also a fairly large number of Porsche/Lambogini/Audi/BMW/Mini/Ducati//Triumph/KTM vehicles rolling around town.

I suspect that they are not all members of 'The Orange Mafia' ?

Just throwing in alternative view into the pot.

Not to forget the "flying doctors monks" who really seem to enjoy their lives with and in a Lear Jet in the States.

That was the last news I've heard. Same same, but different? -facepalm.gif

P.S. Wife's uncle, the ex- wealthy guy was the one who signed up for the cars. He was the only guy who received good money for an education.

Guess you remember the burnt out luxury cars noddy seemed to own in Korat? Hmmm...

But he was "transferred to an "inactive post in Bangkok" about two years ago. 120 K per car is good money, me thinks. Psst.

If anything my family village near LomSak is even poorer.

MiL lives on 3,500bht a month (3,000 from me, 500 from the government)

And is widely seen as the wealthiest woman in the village.

House had no running water, until I paid for a pump.

Shared toilet/shower out back in the jungle.

Corrugated iron house on stilts, open holes for windows and doors.

Mud road, impassable in the rainy season.

Nearest 7-11/ATM/Clinic/Bus over 20Km away in LomSak.

The local school doesn't have electricity or internet.

Perhaps the post title should be titled "the forgotten Sisaket Farmers and their problems," because as I have said before, it does not represent my area, and I would not like readers to get the impression all of Isaan is like that.

No idea where YOUR village is. But I've sen similar villages in Mukdahan, Buri Ram and other areas. You wrote in one post that a few foreigners have built houses in your village?

Foreigners seem to make villages wealthier.
