(TCT) waivers and Teaching license

Today i received a message from a potential employer asking me how many teaching waivers i have. Embarrassingly i didn't know, and still dont. so today i sat down and did alot of research into what exactly he meant. (The Khurusapha (TCT) waivers and Teaching license)

In my ignorance i replied and the nice man told me to Scan some information pages from my passport and he can check to see how many i have.

Okay, here is my question:

Where in my passport would it tell me how many, or if i do have a waiver and how many i have used?

Thank you

I've just sent them an e-mail to find out if I'm entitled to get another one. It shows good until August this year, might start to build an ark now?

It shows that I'm on my first provisional, but I know that they've got all details on their computer.

It's only a little bit difficult to understand an e-mail coming from TCT. Of course only if they reply.

I just checked mine.

It says it finds no information, but I have had one issued previously (5 years ago now), and one for the same school during the same period; making two (apparently 2 applications went through at the same time). Strange, but I'm happy with it showing none as I can now have 3 more.

I have a new passport number, but used the old one. Do you think that affected the result?

Why to you figure you can have three more? I thought the limit was two waivers, the second one only being issued if you showed progress towards getting a TL itself i.e. attended seminars and enrolled in a University and were working towards an Education degree?

As for the new passport, that's an interesting angle not mentioned before. Since their rumored data base was/is created using passport numbers, those who renewed their passport might in fact not have a record of any prior waivers. Remarkable but also believable.

Thank you for the information and your responses :-)

Unfortunately it looks as though 2 schools in 6 months = 2 waivers. cuts my time from a possible 4 years down to 2 1/2 years at the most.

sad story, 2 weeks ago i thought i could teach here forever becuase no one ever mentions this...

maybe i could stay if i decided to pursue a PGCE which as far as i can tell is not something offered in Thailand, just required. Teachers registering at schools in Singapore and Philippines to study the PGCE makes since but i don't like the idea of flying around all the time.

Information at this website http://seetefl.com/tct-teaching-license/

says the following:

Formal and Non-formal Schools in Thailand

Formal schools can roughly be defined as schools where students are placed in classes along with other students of the same age and follow the Thai curriculum as prescribed by the MOE (Ministry of Education). Formal schools can be government schools or privately run institutions.

Non-formal schools can be defined as schools that teach a curriculum that has some oversight from the MOE. They could be anything from a language to a cooking or a massage school made largely for tourists. These schools are exempt from the TCT’s requirements. For example, foreign language school teachers do not need to worry about the TCT’s requirements.

Interestingly, an agency is defined as being a type of non-formal school (there are many different categories and classifications). They may name the place where one works for them as a second location. As they (the agency) are exempt from the TCT requirements, the teachers they employ do not have to meet the TCT’s requirements either.

Anyone know of any schools that fit this description? that are not a cooking or massage school?

i would hate to have to work for an agency :-( but if that was my only option, which agency???

I was also just told from a fellow teacher that he thinks this Waiver doesn't apply to teacher at universities. Does that even make sense? true?

Thank you for reading

Any news of 3 waivers? My 2nd is up in July, will it be a problem getting a WP next school year starting end April?

Labour most probably will give a work permit until 2017. Immigration however, will extend you permission of stay till August 2016.

Why would Immigration give an extension of stay only until August 2016 ?

Because his TCT provisional teaching permit will expire in that month.

If you're still at the same school when you apply for another waiver, your chances ain't that bad to get a third.

It helps a lot if somebody from your school would do that for you, if not just give it a try.

Best of luck. thumbsup.gif

The point is my friend has already had 3 waivers. Each time you have a new job you lose your old waiver so he has already used 6 years worth of waivers and is starting on his fourth 2 year waiver. It is the same as if he had been working in Thailand for the full 8 years.

Hi everyone,

Just jumping on to this thread to ask a similar question. I am about to start my third year working at the same (and only) school, I am hired through an agency (who are also a language school and have evening and weekend classes) to work at a private school. Does this mean I have never needed a waiver? I have BA English + TESOL (+ three TESOL specialisations that I have done alongside teaching) so I know I don't qualify for the teacher licence. I checked my passport number on the TCT website and it has no information. I have only just started to think about it as I think in another year I want to move to a different area.. if I was to start working in a government school would I then start fresh with the waiver process, i.e. be able to teach at that school for 4 years? I am looking in to possibly doing my MEd either online or with classes part time in BKK at some point, but cannot afford it at the moment, so want to check if I'm still good for 4 years if I move!

Thanks for any help!
