Krabi International Airport immigration officers check document details Wednesday by candlelight

KRABI — Travelers got an early start to Valentine’s Day yesterday at a romantically lit Krabi International Airport, where staff burned candles to keep things moving during a six-hour power outage and security lapse.

The main electrical system was offline for maintenance, and then the backup generators failed in the passenger terminal building from 9am to 3:30pm on Wednesday. The disruption affected officers who had to frisk more than 3,000 arriving passengers and write down their information on paper, all by candlelight.

Police to implement enhanced technology for immigration screening

BANGKOK, 11 February 2016 (NNT) – The Royal Thai Police is set to integrate modern technology into the immigration screening process, assuring that all visitors will be properly handled in wake of the power shortage at Krabi Airport.

The Royal Thai Police Commissioner-General Pol Gen Chakthip Chaijinda has said regarding the power outage incident at Krabi Airport yesterday, that the incident disabled authority from conducting history checks for 1,000 visitors entering the Kingdom at the time.

He said the incident affected the work of officials, but all visitors admitted to the Kingdom during the outage have been properly regulated in a followup procedure.

The commissioner-general has said the police are aiming to install advanced devices to enhance the performance of the immigration screening process.

Don't worry, the ATC staff managed to avoid any collisions. Probably got on the roof and fired flares to signal the pilots, a la WWII.

So, if someone wants to take down a plane, they just need to cut the power at Krabi "International" Airport for a while and make sure the backup generators have no diesel.

...

Is that what happend, the generators ran out of fuel? The link to the full story in the OP does not work for me, which means I can't check if the information is there.

This is a reference to the linking of entry into Thailand to fingerprinting and the rollout of biometrics from the present test phase to be mandatory and operational!

No, I was being sarcastic, they didn't give a cause for the failures, only this:

"Airport Director Attaporn Nuang-udom said he was given two days notice by the provincial electricity authority about maintenance work and upgrades to be carried out 9am to 4pm, but he didn’t expect the backup generators to fail.

Attaporn told a reporter by telephone today the back-up generator system is working again. He said the airport will rent generators in the near future to prevent such an incident from happening again."

Given 2 days notice but didn't think to <deleted> check that the backup generators actually worked. Morons.

"frisking" isn't gonna find anything well hidden. Crazy.

The same thing immediately crossed my mind, let us hope they are not aware of this, what a SNAFU

No security concern as 3,000 tourists entering the country without security check

309-wpcf_728x409.jpg

BANGKOK: -- The director-general of the Airport's Department and acting director of the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand assured yesterday of no security concern after Krabi international airport allowed about 3,000 tourists to enter the country without computer screening checks during a six-hour power blackout at the airport.

Mr Chula Sukmanop said most of the 3,000 tourists came on chartered flights in group tours with certified tour companies.

Besides they are mostly Scandinavians, Chinese and Malaysians, he said.

Therefore this could not cause a security concern, he said.

He said the blackout was caused by error on the power backup system which could still keep on functioning for only two hours after the blackout.

But he said the airport has no additional power backup system which is normally necessary for all airports.

However he said that the incident has prompted the need to check power backup systems of all airports with both domestic and international flights as in near future these airports are expected ton receive higher number of visitors.

They include Krabi, Udon Thani, and Surat Thani, he added.

The power blackout hit Krabi airport since 10 am. Power supply was restored six hours later, during which 10 flights with about 3,000 tourists arriving.

Hundreds of passengers skate through Krabi immigration during blackout
Phuket Gazette

PHUKET: About 800 international arrivals breezed through Krabi Airport immigration on Wednesday due to a six-hour blackout that caused the computer systems to shut down.

“Immigration officers had to manually take down passenger information, and later enter it in the system when it was back up and running,” confirmed Attaporn Nuangudom, director of Krabi International Airport.

The loose security measures come months after a leaked memo from Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) warning that Islamic State (IS) terrorists had been dispatched to Phuket.

“After checking all passengers in the system, I assure you that there was no one who posed a security threat,” Mr Attaporn said.

Officials noted that the blackout was due to a generator malfunction and that they are currently renting one while the original one undergoes maintenance.

Six hours. Currently renting generator.

Clearly no plan C let alone plan B.

Reminds me of an unexpected serious blackout in my condo building on Petchaburi Road some 15 years back.

Our condo did have a reserve generator, the condo technician staff tried to start the generator but failed.

One of the owners on the committee (a senior exec from a bank) asked if there was any fuel in the tank. Nobody had checked, sure enough no fuel. The several jerry cans alongside the generator were then checked, all empty.

Same owner asked when was the last time the generator was started to ensure it was in working condition. Answer - many years ago and no records available.

Turned out there were parts missing.

Here's the twist;

The owners committee held an on the spot meeting and ordered that it be repaired immediately and tested once a week and always full of fuel.

The repairs didn't happen, no fuel purchased. Why? the condo treasurer (an old fiery dragon) decided this was all a waste of money and she independently told the paid building manager she would not provide any funds for the repair / for fuel.

Several owners pooled some money, bypassed the treasurer dragon and the building manager (who was very frightened of the dragon), and we employed an outside company to quickly repair the generator.

When I sold my condo, committee members were still conducting the weekly test run and checking the jerry cans.

So... "The loose security measures come months after a leaked memo from Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) warning that Islamic State (IS) terrorists had been dispatched to Phuket." {Quote} (Was this a planned failure???)

Malaysia was one of the Countries that had passengers slide thru Security... Also any of the other Countries of Flights origins could have had Terrorists onboard as there has been this tracking in the last 6 years...

Somebody failed in Maintenance! Heads need to roll... Somebody needs to be reduced in Rank... Demoted lesser Job Title... Lesser Income... or Fired!

Literally they have put the whole of Thailand at a raised risk... Also remember "Cobra Gold" is in Process! To do damage to any of the troops/Equipment/Ships/Planes during this time, would put Thailand at a Financial Loss! Not the resident's of Thailand... Being Royal Thai Police facilitated the entry into Thailand!

This is using same language and thought structure as Thailand uses against us! If they don't like it? Sorry it is still not defamation!!!
