Laos steps up border security, gets tough on foreigners entering the country

VIENTIANE:-- The government of Laos has ordered its immigration officials to step up checks on foreigners trying to enter the country and increase security at all border checkpoints.

Officials have been ordered to ensure that all foreigners are in possession of valid passports and visas before being allowed to enter and that luggage and vehicles will be checked more thoroughly than had been previously.

The urgent order which was issued on Saturday and effective immediately, comes in the wake of an increase in violent and serious crime, including robberies of foreign tourists, weapons and drug smuggling, shootings and other drug related offences.

In November, twenty people, nine of whom were Thai nationals, were arrested in possession of war grade weapons and drugs after Laotian authorities seized a huge arsenal of weapons near Vientiane. The authorities in Laos believe criminal gangs in Thailand were involved in the smuggling of the weapons across the border.

Last week a Chinese man was killed and three others injured following a shooting in Phou Khoun district of Luang Prabang, while two Chinese tourists were robbed and murdered in the Xaisomboun district in central Laos a week earlier.

Laos is a popular destination for foreigners in Thailand who wish to apply for or renew visas or to complete what is known as an Out/In border run.

The increase in checks on foreigners entering into Laos is likely to cause delays at the immigration checkpoints at Vientiane and Savannakhet.

No surprise here......10 years ago street crime was zero to none and gun related violence NONE........

I am no expert on crime related stories but remember the first gun related violence in Vientiane when a Thai started shooting on foreigners in broad day light and police needed to arm themselves to get this thug arrested..........a month ago a Lao national murdered a complete family of 8 with a gun....unprecedented.

Cool running Laos 2016

Yes I can remember Laos in 1996... A rare sight was a car in Vientiane, it was, indeed a magical place back then.

Sadly, times have changed........no chance of getting into any trouble back then, they would come out of their houses and give you water and bananas just to talk to you. Long gone now.

Sadly a sign of the times, the world a mess, austerity no doubt has decreased tourist numbers, the gun manufacturers are having a good time, the politicians seem to be quite happy that uneducated thugs and international criminals are running around everywhere with guns and explosives, I say it again make the posession of guns illegal, introduce an amnesty to hand them in and a huge fine or time inside for non compliance.

So that means a valid passport was not required so far? Nice :)

the town i live in, on the banks of the mighty mekong, features a 'laos' market twice a week. people from laos arrive by the thousands, in long boats, selling their goods and buying fanta, coca cola and eggs... and lots of other things.

thai immigration appears to conduct id checks but to get across the border / river up here would be SO easy. bridge 1 and 2 are 50 km up or down stream.

there are many boats out at night on the river, one could get ANYTHING across every night

So no more day passes, aka ID card, for Thais.whistling.gif

It doesn't say that.

Red between the lines. They started again not allowing ID cards on the crossings from Isaan into Cambodia this weekend. Only a valid PP is accepted. BTW PP is for ALL nationalities.

I still think it's highly unlikely that the 3-day ID pass will be withdrawn as it's a reciprocal arrangement.

Deep joy as I'm going across on 23 or 24th March for a visa renewal. Mukdahan to Savannaket, I will take into consideration the possible delays so I'm not late with my application. Otherwise nothing new, usual fun.
