SAMUI — A 26-year-old Frenchman was killed after he rode a motorcycle into a parked garbage truck early this morning in front of Samui Town Center.

Rescue workers had trouble freeing the man, who struck the front of the truck so hard at about 3am on Thursday that his head entered and became stuck in its grill.

Perhaps donating his body as a dummy test to show Thais the result of riding a motorcycle without a crash helmet?

Somewhere, some one, perhaps parents, perhaps siblings definitely friends are going to be very shocked and upset about this poor persons demise .. your post is irreverent, callous and a poor attempt at humour... for god sake a guy just died show some respect..... you have over 7000 posts so assume you have been around here for some time and whilst one sometimes can become desensitised to the constant stream of trauma that Thai roads and transport mode presents, I just don't think trying to get a laugh at this is the correct thing to do...

Enough said

RIP young fella...... condolences to friend and family .

The garbage trucks on Samui generally don't have normal lights on on Samui, except a flashing orange one on top. And chances are that the truck was at the wrong side of the road to collect the rubbish. So let this be a warning; wear a helmet and take it slow. RIP.

Why don't you people read before commenting? It clearly says the truck was parked so whether it had lights on is fairly irrelevant, it's more important whether the motorcyclist was using his lights and how much he had to drink by 3am. Also add Hong King to the list of left hand side of road drivers, fairly civilised if rebellious.

being british and often popping over to the continent, it was not uncommon when tired or not thinking to stray onto the opposite side fo the orad. While we can surmise all we want, he was doing one heck of a speed to embed himself in the grill and whether he was on the wrong side or not is rather irrelevant .

RIP to the young man I am sure his family will be distraught and very upset. The only consolation as has been previously mentioned his demise would have been sudden so probably painless.

Not wearing a helmet, and struck the truck so hard his head was embedded in the grill? He was definitely speeding to do that. The only good thing, something like that would have killed him instantly, so no suffering.

Also slamming into the front.. either the truck was on the wrong side of the road or he was, given that France just like most of the civilized world drivers on the right side and here they drive on the left he might have been on the wrong side of the road.

What has driving on the left or the right have to do with being civilized Diving without a helmet is idiotic I 3am in the morning did he not see the truck

I was teasing of course, because many members are Brits and they are so sensative about this. Its always a fun joke saying we drive on the right side so if we drive on the right side you guys drive on the wrong side.

Anyway of course it would be expensive and not real practical, but it could be done. A full switch of the world to metrical would also make things a lot easier.

Others should learn from the foolish act of even a deceased in order not to follow the same fate...

There are those who drive on the right and there are those who drive on the left. And then there are those drive on the left and the right and quite often down the middle as well. Anyone driving in China, Thailand, India and various other locations will be very familiar with the latter.

For "parked" read "static" as to be there at that time means they were collecting therefore any question re lights are relevant.

By day they're bright orange and stand out like a pike-float.

Yeah, right !

Guess all the red ones are very underdeveloped

He didn't say " Under developed " he said " Civilised " A very big difference.

The only " Off " I have had was the result of a drunken frenchman. He staggered out of a bar. Staggered to the kerb where he looked left and immediately stepping into the road and as such a few feet in front of me.

What happened to the clampdown on motorcyclists ?

What happened to ANY clampdown?! cheesy.gif

Condolences to family and friends of the deceased.

Due to the amount of deaths caused on the roads by people driving on the wrong side.A new proposal has been issued by our wonderful leader.

Announcement.

We in Thailand drive on the left, however due to the great number of foreign tourists who,in their home country, drive on the opposite side,we have decided to try and ease the problem.

As of Monday the21st of March,All Buses, lorries, and commercial vehicles will commence to drive on the Right.

If this proves to be successful, then on Tuesday the 22nd of March, all other vehicles and motorbikes will follow suit.

Very sorry and condolences to family and friends.

Similar incident for me, it was about 2006 and there was a younger guy about this guy's age and we used to drink, do the rounds looking at the girls, play pool, yada, yada, yada.

He loved to just open throttle the bike, no helmet, just blast off to the next bar, you know the indestructible youth (fond memories) feeling, "last guy to the bar buys the next round!" sort of thing.

One night crashed and died.

RIP to that Swiss kid as well as to this Frenchman, too young to go.

I think you are reading too much into it. Most are just sad individuals with too much time on their hands and no interests. Loneliness is felt most acutely by the man with no resources. Add a Thai wife who just wants to go shopping all the time, and TV probably becomes a blessed relief.
