Just watched the highlights. Keeper could have done better with the first German goal. Bad marking with the second. Nice first England goal. Cheeky great second goal then a powerful header.

I thought Dier stood off Toni Kroos too much for the first goal.

Great positives from the game but the central defense looked suspect and i don't think Cahill is really up to the job.  John Stones and Mike Smalling for me.

I was thinking exactly the same thing carms, strange that none of the pundits picked up on it biggrin.png

Its fair to say by the second half they realised too much respect was being shown.

Beaten England Quarter Finalist Rooney said, "Yes of course it was the right decision to play me in every game of the Euros....I haven't scored in ten months that's true but look at my record...."

His pupped master nodded sagely....and nodded and nodded.

Just out of interest do Scotland have an International football team these days or is it still just tennis and cycling? whistling.gif

Hope Hodgson doesn't revert back to the dreary old ways and call up all those amazing players who flopped at the World Cup. So they can flop again.

Go with the new talent, their hunger, energy and will to win.

Not the old very well paid never achievers - please, pretty please.

I sort of agree with the ''blood the kids'' train of thought but I think it would be a huge risk to leave out the experience of Rooney and Carrick (or even Milner) with Vardy or Drinkwater or Dier on the bench to come on as 'impact subs' as it were.

They've had their chance and failed dismally.

Time to move on.

Look at what France did in 1994 and what it led to in 98/00.

Their ain't a chance in hell Hodgson or any manager come to that would leave out Rooney and neither should they, over the last ?? years at international. Level he's been our most reliable scorer and arguably been our stand out player. Atm He's the leader of the pack and quite rightly is the capt.

Whether he leads us into the world cup? Is another question. Personally i think he will, he'll be 32 and after that it'll probably be time to pull out of internationals and by then they'll be replacements but now Nah imo it'll be foolish ti discard him.

think it would be absolutely barmy to consider rooney as a starting XI player for this tournament. he's just too slow. and then even off the bench it's hard to see what he really brings to the party to affect a match whether you're winning or losing.

And his performances at major tournaments should really speak for themselves.

against dross. in tournaments he's more likely to get sent off than score a goal. you get a great new dawn like that performance of energy and pressing against germany and then still want to bring the ruddy-faced lumbering throwback into the team? weird.

Roy Hodgson, face facts: Wayne Rooney no longer right fit for England

The ESPN FC team discuss whether or not Wayne Rooney will fit in England's new-look squad.

If Wayne Rooney is fit enough to walk, he will be in Roy Hodgson's England squad for the European Championships this summer. No amount of goal-scoring heroics from Harry Kane or Jamie Vardy will be enough to send the Manchester United striker into international exile. Rooney will be the first name on the England manager's team sheet when his team play Russia in Marseille, France, in June.

"I have to repeat: Wayne is our captain and has captained the team extremely well in the past two years," Hodgson said after a 3-2 victory over Germany in Berlin on Saturday. This suggests that the 30-year-old's value as a leader will be important for a young, inexperienced group of players in France. Yet Rooney has struggled for fitness and form this season. He would not make the squad on merit. To shoehorn him into the team requires a number of compromises.

Hodgson picked four strikers in his squad for the Brazil World Cup two years ago. If he followed a similar route, Kane, Vardy, Daniel Sturridge and Danny Welbeck would appear to be ahead of Rooney at this point. There are always concerns about Sturridge's fitness, and Welbeck is being nursed back from a serious knee injury, but both have the sort of pace that stretches defences and creates space for teammates. Taking Rooney as a fifth striker would narrow midfield options in France.

That did not worry Hodgson too much in Brazil. In the first two matches against Italy and Uruguay, he started with just two specialist midfielders, Steven Gerrard and Jordan Henderson. All semblance of balance in these sides was discarded because the manager was desperate to get Rooney and Gerrard, his elder statesmen, onto the team. Both games were lost 2-1 in shambolic circumstances, and England were out. The third match, against Costa Rica, was meaningless. When the pressure is most intense, Hodgson relies on the players he believes he can trust, even if all evidence suggests they are out of form or nearing the end of their career.

Rooney has been more impressive for England than for Manchester United over the past two years. Hodgson knows that the striker is at his best when he is bearing down on the opposition. When Rooney plays with his back to goal, his poor first touch and haphazard control are exposed. The England manager has a much clearer understanding of how to get the best out of the forward than United's Louis van Gaal, who misuses Rooney on a weekly basis.

Yet the deeper Rooney drops, the less effective he becomes. It is hard to make a case for him as a front-line striker given the competition. If Hodgson tries to fudge the issue in France as he did in Brazil -- against Italy, Rooney played on the left of midfield -- England's potency will diminish.

Even at the peak of his powers, Rooney was a player who needed the team to be built around him for maximum effectiveness. Now that he is in decline, it is not worth compromising the team to accommodate Rooney.

Yet Hodgson will. The England manager does not see himself as hidebound. "At some stage I was told I'm conservative in some way and that will stay with me for the rest of my life," he said, refuting the suggestion that he is predictable. There is an innate caution about his teams, though. Bottom line: Hodgson trusts players he has trusted before.

It is hard to see why. In Brazil, with youthful energy available to England across the pitch, the fading legs of Rooney and Gerrard took central roles. In almost any other country, the performances in the 2014 World Cup would have gotten Hodgson sacked.

Two years on, there is even more pace in the squad. There are more goals, too. No defence in Europe would be comfortable dealing with Sturridge, Kane or Vardy. Hodgson has been presented with a rare opportunity to be radical and kill off suggestions that he is a conservative. Instead, he will once again turn to Rooney.

For what? The captaincy? There might be a lack of leaders in Hodgson's squad, but that is matched with a refreshing lack of ego. While Rooney might know what tournament football is all about, the sum total of that experience is defeat and rancour, stretching from Portugal in 2004 to Brazil 10 years later.

Hodgson has one more chance to get things right with England. It is now or never. Forcing Rooney into the team would be repeating the mistakes of the past.

Completely the opposite Weird not to Have a player that's the captain of arguably one of the biggest clubs in the world is their leading goalscorer EVER, won 5 prem title 2 lge cups 1 European cup player of the year countless players of the mth and is currently on his best goal scoring form ever for his country. At 19 goal in 31 games that's less than 1 in 2 As I said it would be 'weird' not to Have him as a/ captain b/ in the team. Imo He'll walk into that young dressing room as captain backed up by being THE most successful player in the squad irreplacable ATM.

how do you explain england's lack of energy and tiredness in other world cups where they were similarly crap but had done the correct type of acclimatisation?

Rooney has been holding United back, he has lost his pace, yes he will get a few goals, but he slows the team down, we have looked a lot more threatening with Rooney out.

England would be silly to bench Kane or Vardy to fit Rooney in, also he takes a few games after being out to get back into form, can England afford him the time?.

He has been great for United but sadly you can see his input is not the same.

Totally agree nev.

England where great the other day in spite of Roy and due to 2 other managers (Poch and Ran) who have brought on some great talent. Roy will take the credit for the other day but the team almost forced itself on him, he'll blow it if Rooney and some of the other older guard are fit as he'll have to pick a team himself

If he never played another minute for England I wouldn't mind to be brutally honest.

glad someone else noticed this. that wasn't a hodgson team or performance, it was a bunch of pochettino and ranieri players with a smattering of klopp, all high energy and pace and pressing. so literally nothing like hodgson has ever done at any stage of his career. so he hasn't suddenly discovered a new way of managing and reinvented himself, he's lucked out that a bunch of quick players who all play a similar style at their clubs and who are all in great form were available to him at the same time.

Boring Stevie

How many Ranieri players played? and how many minutes?

Henderson and Lallana do me a favour

Hodgson is the manager and picked the team he is also heavily involved in everything sorrounding England give the man some credit for once instead of this futile hatred of a once Liverpool manager,

Edit swap Barkley for Lala and Drinkwater for Henderson then you are on the right track

not boring, just correct. after the last euros and literally england's worst ever world cup performance in 2014 you'd think that any manager with a bit of decency and dignity would just resign. not hodgson though, 'cos when things go badly it's always someone else's fault. and typically he throws a player or two under the bus. so in this instance, when the players are playing the way they are thanks to their club managers and good coaching on a day to day basis, it's suddenly hodgson's doing? get to .

he's a magician is hodgson. manages to hoodwink so many people into believing he's a half-decent manager when if you look at his actual record he's a total fraud. so don't feel bad mr ed, you're just another one in the long line who can't see the wood for the trees with him.

The one b4 was down to capello, he sucked it up took a Season weary group of. Prem players, the prick then locked them away,t

remember, no g friends mobiles ect ect and trained their nuts off for 2?? Weeks just like a typical old.school Italian training camp where traditionally they treat the players more like kids, when what was really needed. Was. .well i ain't the

expert but NOT what he did, probably the polar opposite, any way we all saw the results truly appalling.

Yeah give it a rest your just sounding bitter. Any internatuonal manager is reliant on the what the clubs produce that's just the way it Is, ramsey probably being the last one going slightly against the.grain with the.west ham trio as prime examples but not forgetting the previous Season they'd won a European trophy. and NOT forgetting injury forced his hand even hurst said he didn't. Expect to play.

Going back to Rooney atm he`s earned and deserves his place and captaincy. 19 in 31 games. Ain't a.few goals its a bloody good return and can't be argued With. Or that that after this last lot of injuries he's looked a tad slower,, so the aging proccess may have started or is he just coming back to early?. Either or hardly something new When the time comes for him to go, it'll happen, but NOT now.
