YANGON: -- Some 300 farmers living near the Letpadaung copper mining project in Sagaing Division’s Salingyi township continued their protest for the second day on Thursday as mining operations resumed.

According to the Irawaddy, the farmers whose farmland have been confiscated for the mining venture showed up to demand the mine to be shut down and that they be properly compensated for the loss of land.

The protesters said that they sent a petition to National League of Democracy chairwoman Aung San Suu Kyi and also chair of a parliamentary committee overseeing projects implemented since the previous government asking that the copper mining operations be halted.

“We don’t want the project. We are jobless and our land is confiscated,” said Mar Cho from Tone village.

The copper mining is a joint venture between a Chinese company and the military-owned Union of Myanmar Economic Holdings Limited.
