Is 'dual pricing' on the increase

It seems to me that even if dual pricing isn't becoming more widespread, it is becoming more obvious.

My particular case in point is the number of hairdressers / barbers who have advertised prices in the window, or on a card inside the shop, and are quite unashamed to tell you that that is 'Thai People' price. Such blatant racism would get you jailed in many other countries. They don't even seem to register the fact that they are losing your business as soon as you hear this. At the end of the day, a euro one way or the other isn't going to break the bank - but the quite obvious dual pricing in some trades is, to my mind at least, becoming more common.

Nothing you can do about it, if you think they are charging you more walk away, their loss at the end of the day

I don't even bother saying anything if I think I am being dual charged, just walk off, I remember a incident years ago where a brush salesman came outside my house whilst I was in the garden, I asked him how much for a brush, he said 100 Baht, (30-40 in the Shopping Mall) I didn't say a word to him and walked in the house, when I came out 10 minutes later he was still stood there laugh.png

There are things I have seen on the markets that I would like to buy but never do, I really can't be bothered with all the haggling, I just shop at places where the price is clearly shown

As for hairdressers the one I go to charges me the price shown in Thai on the list,

I really don't class it as racism, Thais try to rip each other off as much as they do Farangs

Thai's understand farang means money. If your A poor farang Thailand might not be the country for you.

If you go out in the sticks then it's A good chance you'll pay what A Thai does.

What I do cause I know Thailand isn't A rich country.If I go and get A haircut and it's say 30 baht.I will

Probably give 50 or 60 baht.

i employ my own form of dual pricing by always leaving a small tip, 20 or 40thb. is worth it to see the look of surprise from the guy who filled up my pickup at the gas station. stuff is so cheap here paying an extra dollar here or there dose not make much difference. having a thai drivers licence and speaking a few words of thai normally gets around the double pricing thing. i was just in new zealand where the topic of making national parks more expensive for tourists came up. i doubt it will happen but it was still being discussed.

Went into a shop to buy 4 tonic waters for my evening gin. Wherever I go I pay 15 baht each. The guy clearly asked for 80 baht. I handed him the 3 twenty baht notes I had ready and he entered it in the till without a word. Opportunism thy name is Thailand.

My part of upcountry the prices are the same for farang and Thai - though it can vary from village to town... cheaper in the village, I leave the difference as a tip... but I think this style of dual pricing would have me walking out the door... national parks are fine with me but personal services, not.

I came here 15 years ago... At that time there was only one price for all..I saw everything going for the month...

Over the years it has crept in. In answer to KOREBZIEHER, It has never ceased.

Also, Thais do not use their brains (if any) when the farang walks out they have lost money and they do not get the repeat customer.

Not the farang, we just go on our way until we find a more suitable establishment...coffee1.gif

It's not a look of surprise, it'a look of shock that somebody tipped them, Thais don't tip them so why do you? By doing this you are adding to the problem

I have not and shall not ever eat there again.

Not that i ever have a delivery from them, but is that true? How do you know? Is it printed somewhere?

Having lived in four foreign countries as an expat and traveled to 45 countries, it has been my experience there is dual pricing most foreign countries.

There should be!

Most citizens in foreign countries that tourists and many expats come in contact with did not have the same money making opportunities. Woman in Thailand

over 25 have difficulty getting jobs competing with younger women. When many reach 40, it's very difficult for them to earn money. The elderly depend upon family members for financial security, primarily their daughters.

The dual price system is increasing with the loss of Thai jobs, food inflation, currency exchange rates, increased taxes, and more tourists spending less money and spending less time in the country.

Without dual pricing many citizens and elders would be homeless, hungry or be forced to crime.

Be thankful for the dual pricing and it's better not to even talk about it. Just be thankful what you have and the more money you spend, the power of money dictates it will come back to you in the future. Feel good about it as you are proving a gift to feed the needy, help with rents, medical expenses, and social security for the elderly, school uniforms and much more.

The land of smiles are not smiling as back in the day.

Be calm and show empathy.coffee1.gif

You tip for having your pickup filled with gas? You must be the only one to do that. I'd sooner self-service anyway with the reluctant reduction in price. Plus I don't think I'd get 12 liters into my 8 liter can as has happened a few times when filled by an attendant here.

And for the OP...yes I think dual pricing is on the increase although I've seen it written as a "discount for Thai nationals". Either way it is still a "SKIN/BLOOD TAX".

Previous constitutions have stated:

Unjust discrimination against a person on the grounds of the difference in origin, race, language, sex, age, physical or health condition, personal status, economic or social standing, religious belief, education or constitutionally political view, shall not be permitted.

You make up your mind if DP is breaking the law.

Rumor monger? It just seems strange for a big company like that, so just interested in how he knows. :)

All the wonderful food here and you eat KFC? I met a pommie bloke once in a restaurant here that ordered egg and chips - said it tasted just like home. Strange fruit indeed.

I agree with you - it is most certainly NOT racialism, it is simple grees. Unfortunately it is common not only in Thailand, but in most other tourists centres. Take Manhattan main Stree - 6th Ave.- with all the tourists stores, where the prices are 3 to 4 fold of the normal prices. Here in Thailand, each Farang is considered a tourist and hence the

situation, which looks like racism.

A few comments;

1)I've been coming to Thailand for 25+ years and I always remember dual pricing, especially at tourist attractions. I always felt it was a fair policy, giving the locals with lower incomes access to such things.

2) My wife has made a bit of a game of it. Our children, raised in the US and not Thai speakers, still qualify for the discount after a bit of persuasion from the wife. And that courtesy increasingly applies to other "step children". Our daughter recently visited along with 3 of her school friends, who all became my wife's "children" at ticket booths, despite one having bleach blonde hair and a Southern Belle accent!

3) My wife was extremely offended when during a recent dentist visit, cleaning her Thai teeth cost more than my farang teeth (mine had less plaque). She vowed never to return to this particular dentist due to the "reverse discrimination" as she saw it.

Agree with you, its not racism ! Its trying to earn more money as they can, from tourism... Its all over Europe, i got stung 15 euros for a shot of espresso in Rome, tourist price !! Visited a food stall in Egypt, alone, then with a friend, paid less than half the second visit.. Life as tourist.. A mate was conned in London as well......

It wasn't one price for all even 15 years ago I know but it wasn't as blatant as it is today

Stupid reply...racist??? If you

Are fortunate to have 10X the

Income in retirement that the locals

Are making working 6 days a week

Why complain if you pay 10-15%

More for something....Stop being

So freaken cheap!!

10-15%??

National parks 10 x the price!

Prices should not be based on what people think you can afford, especially food products.

There are many Thai people with money, do they all pay a percentage higher because they are richer?

Not cheap at all, just common sense to pay the correct price, foolish to pay more.
