newbieguy
Hey everyone, First post here. And not a good one. I recently relocated to Chiang Mai. Came here for a number of personal reasons. And saw it as a great place to live a fun lifestyle without breaking the bank. Anyway, I was riding around on a tuk-tuk last night and the driver asked me if I wanted to have fun. New to the country and feeling adventurous, I said yes. He whisked me over to a place called "The Good Time Bar". I got in a little over my head, and after a few drinks (totally my fault) brought a girl home. We had fun together, but she bled during that time. I'm now really concerned. I was unprotected. Totally out of my character, but totally my fault. I've tried to ask her if she has any STDs or other issues, to no avail. She speaks almost no English, and the translating copy/paste I'm using doesn't seem to be working very well for the communication. She said "she takes medicine... no problems". Great. I'm now thinking I should take PEP as a precautionary step to limit my chances of contracting HIV. Can anyone please advise if this is available in Chiang Mai? I'd even be happy to fly back to the States to take it, but I'd be outside the 36-hour window. The number to Red Cross doesn't seem to work. And a clinic by the name of CMMediclinic isn't open today. Totally out of my element here. I'd appreciate any help/advice.
TheSiemReaper
Go to a hospital or a GP immediately and take whatever you can to minimize the risk of infection. Is it likely she has HIV? No, not really. Is it possible? Hell, yes.
newbieguy
Sure. I'd be glad to go somewhere. I just don't know where to go and how to get there. I'm not sure how common PEP is here? Is there any information on how I would be able to get PEP? A Google search comes up with very little information.

BarnicaleBob
Being that you are new to Thailand and speak little or no Thai, I suggest you go to one of the following hospitals where English is spoken: Chiang Mai Ram Hospital (the closest one inside the City), Bangkok Hospital (on the super highway just east of the city) or the Geriatric Medical Center, if you over age 40 (located on the road to Hong Dong just past the Tesco Lotus). Tell the doctor what happened and ask for his/her advice. I would also consider going back in two or three months for an HIV test as it sometimes takes that long to show up in your system. I hope all works out well for you and remember to never ride a strange horse bareback, it could throw you and cause all sorts of problems.
newbieguy
Thanks guys. I'm going to head over to Ram. English wasn't that great, but I think they have the PEP (from what I can understand). You live and you learn, that's for sure. Won't make this mistake again.

pgrahmm
Over 40 is classed as geriatric? Yes - even in sports competition over 40 is considered as a "masters" classification.....Most see this a revenue driven as - if conditioned someone can compete to about 55 with the 40 somethings.....After that better stick within a 5 to 7 year bracket unless exceptionally talented & not injury prone..... chiang mai
Read this: http://www.cdc.gov/std/treatment/2010/sexual-assault.htm PEP is Post Exposure Prevention. for STD's (sexually transmitted disease).
Sheryl
Any of the main hospitals - see an Infectious Disease Specialist. I agree that under the circumstances -- given that she was apparently menstruating -- PEP is probably advisable unless you have liver disease or other condition that would make the meds risky. Sure I have done foolish things and taken risks but I can not recall ever taking a direct risk to my life, your words, just for one night of sex. Judgment not intended. mamborobert
What is it about Chiang Mai that brings such people here? People having sex with people they have just met....shocking. Never happened in my day in my home country. Abstinence and no pre marital sex was the go. Hence never any orphanages, VD clinics and the like in any Western country, Why even after marriage sex was clearly just for procreation never enjoyment. Having said that without the Papal edict on the Rythm Method I doubt i, some siblings (certainly the youngest "change of life" miracle), innumerable cousins, , and a good number of TV posters would be here. Well done to the OP. Could clearly have seen myself in a similar position in my younger days but where you have it well over me is your ability to recognise what you have done, seek help, learn from it, and act upon it. Commendable.

As for the Geriatric hospital I believe it is a part of the University hospital and has the intentions of raising the age to 60 as more people age and more Farongs move to Chiang Mai to enjoy the wonderful city. rogeroc
Do some in depth reading on the actual risks of catching HIV through unprotected sex on the Internet and i think that will help put your mind at ease a little. Consider also that the risks of the girl actually having HIV (even if bargirl) are probably little more than 1 in 100.

rogeroc
Definitely worth a read as the thread contains some much more probable figures. Also worth bearing in mind that the vast bulk of prostitution in Thailand is homegrown where i think it is much more likely that the venues, health care, rates of drug injection, education etc will be poorer than in the Western working girl environment of Chiang Mai. If the Op is genuine and is fearful and is doing all the right things in getting checked out etc why create such alarm. Statistically the Op would be extremely unlucky to have caught HIV from this single encounter.
terminatorchiangmai
i would not worry to much. not the first time a girl is bleeding. Can be late or early menstruation. Can be that she was a virgin or not had a bigger size in her yet. can also be she or you have a candida infection. Just go to the Pharmacy and take an antibiotic cure. if you get itchy down there take some Canesten cream or a tablet. For an HIV test you have to wait 6 months anyway. If you have an STD the doctor will give you antibiotic also. Better get it your self then have him poking in you thingy. Please do tell me the location of the Good Time Bar or did you mean The Goodview Bar ?. Good luck

Yes, oh Troll, I do know people who have died from an STD contracted in Thailand; more than one. And, what your puny mind failed to grasp in my post is the fact that someone ... a stranger ... who is willing to have unprotected sex might be a risk to your life in other ways. ~o:37;
