PHUKET: -- The immigration police officer who fatally shot a Rohingya man on the run after escaping the Immigration Centre in Phang Nga on Monday will face an investigation for murder, The Phuket News has been told.

However, police will also charge the deceased Rohingya, named by police 18-year-old “Mohammadkhawnee”, with attempted murder.

“I want to confirm that regarding the incident of one Rohingya man killed during the pursuit, investigation officers are on this case will follow law and order,” said Col Chote Chitchai, Deputy Superintendent of the Phang Nga Provincial Police.

“We will file a complaint against the officer who shot the migrant. However, we will have to wait until we question all witnesses, before we can make any statement about whether or not the shooting incident was an act of self-defense,” he said.

Phang Nga Police Capt Chatree Peinkhayai named the officer involved in the shooting as Phang Nga Immigration officer Snr Sgt Maj Thinakon Noosawas.

“Officers had pursued a group of escapees into the hills in Baan Tham Nam Phud on Monday (May 23), and while Mohammadkhawnee was uphill on a steep slope from the officer, he picked up large rocks and tossed them down at Snr Sgt Maj Thinakon,” Capt Chatree explained.

“Snr Sgt Maj Thinakon fired once in what he said was self-defense. The shot hit Mohammadkhawnee once in his right armpit,” he added.

"police will also charge the deceased Rohingya, named by police 18-year-old Mohammadkhawnee, with attempted murder."

And will be summons and due to his failure to appear will be found guilty of all charges.

You couldnt make this crap up however, in ga ga land, its only to be expected.

Thailand yet again makes itself look more ridiculous by the split second in the international eye.

Can a day go by without these cowardly imbeciles abusing their power and influence one asks? No is probably the sad but correct answer.

Nice of them to charge the corpse and let their pal roam free to shoot a few more if needed.....

Thailand really has a police farce to be proud of....

If the PM wants his country to be taken even slightly seriously on a global scale he needs to iron out this type of utter nonsense with an iron fist. No 'inactive posts' but jail time for bent coppers, flat out dismissal for idiocy of this nature.

When even Laos, Myanmar and Cambodia are starting to look way superior to Thailand in so many respects in even an ASEAN context, action against buffoonery and corruption is needed quickly.

Was a great country once....shame....now it's the embarrassment of the developing world through self inflicted idiocy.

You forgot to add that once he is found guilty the immigration officer will have his case closed due to self defense from the attempted murder by the dead Rohingya.

This will be the defense for the officer that shot him "In self defense".

I'm assuming you're being sarcastic as I didn't see that written in the article.

Anyway, what are they going to do, kill the deceased twice?

I don't think the headline really captures the irony of the situation. It would be better phrased;

Dead unarmed refugee to face murder charge after being shot by police

That would grab the attention of readers worldwide and exemplify the logic used by the Thai police farce.

When was Thailand a great country?

When it was 75B to the Pound, various tinpot regimes hadn't continually raised taxes on the good things in life like booze and tabs to line their pockets during their shaky tenures, when a full night out in Lower Suk (crumpet and included) could have been had for 5000B, you could buy booze at a convenience store 24/7 and there were always bars open all night....
