Brit blacklisted for 5 years for overstay

At a minimum they should be required to show financial proof, accident and medical assurance cover vald for length of stay.

I'm only here for three weeks twice a year [six weeks total] and have all of that and bullet-proof comprehensive travel insurance.

I just don't overstay, and if I did require to stay longer then I would get an extension. What's not to understand?

You're not the issue (mostly, tourists are responsible and have a life to return to). The long term over stayers mostly have severed ties to their home country and have nothing to return home to. It's this spiral downward that most on this thread agree needs to be prevented.

Good point, Daryle. Though, as I'm sure you're aware, Mr Love did arrive on a thirty day tourist visa, or whatever it's called. I daren't risk upsetting the visa [or not visa] pedants. You just never hear the last of it.

Be nice too, Daryle. You make some good points but you could be more diplomatic on occasion. I'm sure you know what I mean. Don't shoot the messenger. Good luck.

There are so many ridiculous assumptions on here that I can't pick one out to start with!
But, to summarize, up to now, the good and the great amongst TVFM's have concluded that the individual must have been carrying out illegal activities (apart from a poultry 3 months overstay, hardly crime of the century), he had sufficient funds (and other information) to obtain a METV from the UK, he looked odd as he may have been sober on Walking St, etc.
When in fact none of you know anything about the guy, or his circumstances, apart from what you've read on a half baked news report!
We know all we need to know...extended overstayer...being deported...fined B20,000...banned for 5 years.

All I need to know! Guilty...Next!
No! What you know, and what you believe is chit chat and rumors on here.
What you actually know about the exact circumstances or outcome of this case are zero!

About the same as your knowledge of the case woody!

How much would the overstay penalty be

20,000bht

This is incorrect! If you have been arrested or turned yourself in you will have to go to the court, (if possible the day after you have been arrested). The judge will fine you for overstaying, usually somewhere between 5000 to 6000 THB. You will remain detained until deportation. You will need to have a ticket! As long as you can't pay for a ticket you will have to stay at the detention-centre. Several hours before take-off you will be transported from the detention-centre to the airport where you will not pass customs by yourself, the officers whom escorts you will take care of that. After you arrived at the airport you will stay in custody until boarding time. You will be escorted to the gate where your passport will be handed to the purser who will hand it to you after you landed in your own country. But, you will not have to pay the 20.000 thb!

And this my friends is the procedure....

So, all in all, a mighty expensive and demoralising experience for Mr Love.

Regularising his immigration status would have been a cinch in comparison. Let that be a warning.

Long may it continue.

One of England's finest no doubt...enjoy those Blighty winters for the next 5 years tongue.png

Just got back from a couple of weeks visiting the relatives in England with my daughter and grandson via Thailand. It was a great time in the UK. The people were friendly, the transportation system worked well, the costs were reasonable considering everyone had to make a living. Had the whole range of weather from snow in Hyde Park to short sleeve shirt in Halesworth. We stayed in Bangkok on the way over and the way back. Stinking hot but good fun at some water park. I must admit I like having 4 seasons and Blighty is not so bad. Had a bit of trouble convincing some Poms in San Roy Yod of this but all in all I would prefer to live in England than Thailand if I had to choose.

You're not involved in making the choices in your family?

Overstay BS.

Who cares. coffee1.gif

Some real nasty crime out there, BIB,

go sort it out, its right under your nose facepalm.gif

Of course in this case it was immigration officers, but still they could freelance and start investigating thefts and murders or issuing parking tickets.

I suppose the same thing could be said back in Farang Land. Leave all the illegal aliens alone until all the "real" criminals have been caught.

Plenty of drug dealers, child molesters and bankers wandering around. Throw open the borders until those miscreants are all behind bars.

Love it!

Now they have the momenta going, they need to keep it up. Get rid of those that want to buck system ASAP.

It will make it, eventually, a whole lot easier for those that do want to stay legal.

You mean a whole lot easier to get rid of us too. We don't have any rights. The only people really wanted are 2 week millionaires.

Your wrong. They like us long term stayers that stay within the Law with the correct Visas or extensions. The only ones that need to be concerned are those that don't want to be legal.

I have been coming and going and living in LOS since 1972 and guess what? Not 1 days over stay.

They are coming after those that don't want to play the game. Being able to do as you like and not comply with the rules is coming to an end along with those continually living in LOS on back to back Tourist Visas.

Egggazackley.

It's not difficult to do the right thing but folk like to take shortcuts and then get their nose out of joint when they get caught or in this case see someone else getting caught.

I'd like to see somebody goto USA, UK, Australia or numerous other western locations and try to stay indefinately on tourist visas. 555555

They need to start chipping folks on the way in, that way they can be tracked or better still, if they overstay a small explosive inside their neck is detonated, they become fertiliser. :D

A serious question...what behaviors do police discern to be "odd"...so often people are stopped for their odd behaviors...but the reportage never specifies or describes the behaviors...

especially on walking street...what is odd behavior that would attract the attention of the police?

In Chiang Mai we have screaming Manic Street Preacher, a guy who marches in a Japan Imperial Army uniform, and an aged Hippie on a Grandma Tricycle with a "Free Hugs" sign.

Sure they have their visa/extensions in ordersmile.png

How are you sure the B20k does not have to be paid? It seems the B5-6k is court and police associated fine for arrest, incarceration and breaking the law and the B20k is an immigration fine for the lengthy overstay. Would immigration at the airport not collect theirs?

The Immigration Bureau is an agency within the RTP. All one big happy family!

No it's not...

Oh yes it is!

Personnel can (and do) get transferred between various departments.

Basically, they all piss in the same pot, but rather than be accountable for anything, they can just say, "not my job"!

Really guys, we all have to remember and respect the fact that when we enter another country we have responsibilities to understand and follow their rules. We are guests. It is the same the world over. When this topic appears - as it regularly does on ThaiVisa - we should all just take it as a heads up or reminder to check we each have met the requirements. So sorry for the guy in question but 106 days? He burnt his own bridges for sure.

Seems to me Thais don't like tourists very much anyway no big loss other Asian countries will be available to him. Maybe its cheaper to overstay take a risk get sent home than trying to renew visa every 90 days. No buggy go to Vietnam Cambodia Philippines plenty of countries to choose from

No idea what that has got to do with anything. An overstayer like this guy is no tourist and is of no interest to other Asian countries either.

Despite it's easy visa rules, Cambodia is reportedly quite tough on overstayers, starting with those who have overstayed more than 30 days. The penalties apparently also include blacklisting. Ditto for Myanmar, which, like Cambodia is relatively lax on short term overstayers but anything more than about 45 days gets hit with serious penalties including possible blacklisting.

Thailand, up until recently has actually been quite lax compared to it's neighbors.

Nothing difficult about renewing a visa every 90 days. Go to Vientiane, get 60 day tourist visa, extend for 30. Leave the country, go to Savannakhet, repeat. Then go to Phnom Penh. Then Hanoi or Penang. Can do this for quite a while and all legal.

At a minimum they should be required to show financial proof, accident and medical assurance cover vald for length of stay.

What if I can show financial proof that will more than cover any accident or medical condition?

That would be great, but then there is the small issue of OVERSTAY!!!

How would you show enough funds for a lengthy overstay (assuming your intent is to stay well over your visa period), say 11 years as one guy admitted to here recently? B1 Million per year up front, for ten years, so B10 Million on arrival and you can draw down a million on each anniversary. Plus, of course, the B20K for overstay.
